Barbados has passed a law that supposedly requires all US and Canadian
citizens to have a passport. It is not yet clear if this will apply to
cruise passengers or if the cruise lines will get a blanket visa or
exemption such as they enjoy in other countries like Honduras, Belieze, etc.
It is thought that other Caribbean countries may also pass similar passport
laws or start enforcing existing laws.

http://tinyurl.com/3bupr "But while Gonsalves is calling for intra-regional
travel without passports, Barbados will, as of March next year, require all
persons arriving in that island to produce a passport instead of just having
a photo ID and a birth certificate."

Either way... I have three suggestions for people who travel outside of the
US:

1) Get a Passport.
2) Get a Passport.
3) Get a Passport.

In this day and age with the world political situation the way it is, there
is no good reason to not have a passport. If you need information on how to
get one, please look at http://travel.state.gov/passport_services.html

Re: Just back..Was told you may need a passport on any cruise if it is passed later this year

Since most cruises require air to reach the point of embarkation, who
cruises without a passport?

Since most cruises go to at least one foreign port, who cruises without a
passport?

Not if you are cruising the Carribean.

I cruise without a passport and do not have the desrire to cruise
MEXICO or even Europe.

Nothing there that I would want to see , Give me the warm weather and
beaches and I am happy.

Re: Just back..Was told you may need a passport on any cruise if it is passed later this year

And all of our travel has been within the United States since 9/11. We have
flown to San Francisco, San Juan and San Diego and Las Vegas, and from Fort
Lauderdale, and in every case all we needed to provide was our passport as
proof of identity.

We have used our passports as proof of identity since 1994.

I never suggested that it was required, just that it was the single best
proof of identity.

I am sorry, Duck, but only San Juan and the U.S. Virgin Islands belong to
us. The rest of the Caribbean belongs to other countries, other
governments.

I second that.. I feel everyone should have a passport if they want to travel.
Costa Rica also now requires a passport, so it looks like the trickle down
theory is happening and it be to your benefit to get a passport now

This is not entirely true there are caribbbean islands that are now making it
mandatory to have a passport even if your coming by cruise ship.. So I
recommend getting one now. because they change these laws and if your booked on
a cruise you will need to get one IN a small amount of time and then you pay
High prices to get them expedited. So wise to get one. As someone else said if
something happens and you have to fly home from a foreign airport you may need
it. no one takes under consideration if there is a problem.

Very good points about if something happens and having to fly home
form one of the Carribean Island not in the US.

We've always needed a passport for travel outside the U.S. You even need
one now to go to Canada.
Definitely need one of Costa Rica.

Not so, but you do need to be able to prove your US citizenship. A
birth cert and photo ID will do fine. Unofficially, if you don't look
like the shady type,
they'll likely let you back and forth without even that (but may not).
I regularly cross into the US and keep my passport handy in the glove
box, however. Sometimes they look at it - sometimes they don't. Of
course, I'm not the shady type! Cheers. JOHN

For us, passports are "must have" items even if we don't have any foreign
travel planned in the foreseeable future. It's certainly simple enough to
get them. I don't understand why some people going on cruises seem to be so
reluctant to have them.

I booked a flight to Australia last night. Leave Sunday. Can't do
that without a passport in hand (or you'll pay through the ass to get
one).

As of 2008, you'll need a passport to cross any border. Part of the
last "national security" bill.
