Finding hotels in January in Costa Rica? Arenal? Monteverde? Montezuma?

We're planning to arrive in Costa Rica on Jan. 19th and stay there
until around Feb. 1.

Right now our tentative plan is to arrive in San Jose, spend just the
one night, then get up early the next morning and head up to
Monteverde, spend 2 nights there, then head over to Arenal for 2
nights, then head out to Montezuma for a week or so.

If we arrive in Monteverde without hotel reservations around Jan. 20th
will we run a risk of not finding a good room? We would ideally like
to find something on the lower side of "nice", that is, with hot
water, clean, and relatively quiet. That would be our criteria for
both Arenal and Monteverde.

As for Montezuma, we would ideally like to rent a little remote cabin
on the beach for a week, but if it has to be a hotel, we'd like it to
have an ocean view, warm water, and no more than $50/night, or $300
for a week if a cabin.

Is this practical?

Anyone who knows how there areas are, especially in January, please
write. I actually lived in Montezuma for a couple months, but that was
back in 1996 and I'm sure it has changed since then.

We'd also be open to other suggestions for a nice beach to spend a
week at, especially anyplace with a nice beach for swimming and a
relatively remote area, not too busy or noisy.

I like Montezuma for these reasons:
It has miles of relatively remote beach to walk and swim in; it has
wildlife to see just outside of town (monkeys, birds, and other
animals); is near a nice Reserve (Cabo Blanco); and has some okay
restaurants and bars to hang out in in the evening. My idea, though is
to spend a lot of time just walking on the beach, swimming, and laying
in a hammock reading, drinking Imperial and Tropical! (I'll have my
own hammock; all I need is a place to hang it!) I stayed in a great
little remote cabin up on a hill overlooking the beach, back in 96,
for $300/month, owned by an American couple. Word is, though, that
they couldn't take the rain, and left for the U.S. and the new owners
dont rent out the cabin anymore...

I would recommend you to try Hotel Finca Valverde in Monteverde. They
have some really nice cabins and an excellent location...I would also
try to make a reservation since is the busiest part of the year. I
think thair website is www.monteverde.net. While in Fortuna I would
stay at Los Lagos Thay have some amazing trails that go to old lava
flows.
