Yes Jenn,
It is still there, 1km out on the road towards Eldoret. It was an old
colonial club. I don`t know what it`s like now, whether the old
colonials still go but it has a pool and golf course and the Rough Guide
describe it as having an unpleasant atmosphere, lacking in service and
basic good manners, starting with the "hostile receptionist"!

Liz,
Thanks for that. Jenn should find it useful.
A friend of mine in Nairobi , also Jenny, was brought up in Kitale and I
think they go to the club when they are up there. We haven`t been to
Kitale. We went to the Tea hotel in Kericho and spent a night in Turi,
in the home of a friend who taught at St. Andrew`s school there. We had
to have hot water bottles it was so cold, and a tot of brandy!
I thought you must have gone on your safari when you didn`t post here!
Hope Jenn the info. Helped you.

Boy.....Pat that does not sound good at al!
Yikes....no I am in Ohio in the U.S.
We have a minister staying with us from Kitale Kenya, and he has invited
us to visit.
All the info that has been posted about The Kitale Club does not sound
like a good place to stay. Does ayone else know of nicer accomadations
there?

Thanks again for all the info!

Jenn,
The Kitale club will probably be fine. It has been there for a long
time.
The information I gave you about the Lantern hotel and the Alakara
hotel may be your best bet. They are the two hotels recommended in the
Rough Guide to Kenya. If you look in that guide or a similar one, you
should be able to get more of an idea.

Jenn -
The Kitale Club wasn't anything like the RG made out, and in fact if newer
editions of the RG are still printing this stuff, they must be liable for
libel laws! It's really weird, since you wouldn't send your worst enemy to
some places the RG recommends (see "Swahili for the Broken-hearted").

We were booked to stay at Barnley's House, which was recommended by the RG.
We arrived, as is usual in Kenya just before lunch. The proprietress seemed
to be genuinely surprised to see us, saying she didn't think we'd be
arriving before dinner time. The room she led us to was so damp that she
couldn't get a fire to light. We sat on the bed, and within a few minutes
our trousers were wet. We went into the Saiwa Swamp reserve (missed the
Sitatunga, saw the deBrazza's Monkeys, before anyone asks!) then our guide
took us into Kitale to look for other accommodation. Kitale isn't on the
general safari circuit, and he hadn't been there before (this was our
routing, not the company's). First of all, he went into the best looking
hotel in the area. He came out saying it was not good. A cynic might think
that he was maybe miffed at not getting a commission, but while parked
outside, I had formed the opinion that the hotel doubled as a knocking shop.
Then he asked around some locals and took us to the Kitale Club, and
negotiated our stay, coming out and informing us 'he is a good man'
(whatever that means!). We really had no problems with our stay. Perfectly
clean and safe. Nice grounds. Clientele appeared to be all members apart
from us, all wazungu and wahindi. Lunch and dinner were surprisingly basic,
but maybe your hosts will know other places to eat???

As long as you don't expect an American-type stay you'll be just fine.

Jenn,
I`ve been thinking about this all day!
I`ve just seen Liz`s latest post and as she has been there I think if
you do go to Kitale, the Kitale club is the place you should go to stay
at. It`s best to have a personal recommendation after all. Your
Minister friend also recommended it as well.
