Job Story: Want to be a Hated Male Nurse?....nurse

smuck -- your words, not mine. 1) I believe in giving competent quality care consistently. If my feelings about any patients affect that care, then what happens when I'm angry, upset, or just feeling too good to pay attention? Just try to tell me you are capable of working an environment like corrections and "caring" about murderers and child molesters. Give me a break! 2) Salary and quality of care are two separate issues. The argument that people who are concerned about their paychecks are lousy nurses is moronic. If you disagree I would suggest taking a course in logic. 3) Idealists who can't find a balance with the real world tend to burn out and make everyone around them miserable. Those who do find a balance and a way to be effective are extremely impressive -- and rare.

Job Story: Want to be a Hated Male Nurse?....nurse

I am trying to get into a nursing program at a college to become an RN. It's been in my family for generations and listening to all of these negative comments is discouraging and disgusting because I hear quite the opposite from my relatives HOWEVER I will be the first male of my family entering this realm of work. I think what all of you guys need to do is realize that times are changing and probably within the next century the term "nurse" will be more accepted as a genderless job. Out with the old in with the new.

Ian -- part of your indoctrination to being a male nurse will be to be more or less flayed alive in nursing school, and then you'll find that many job environments are not much better. (Give me Teamsters to work with any day!) Start toughening up now, because none of us get out unscathed. And I'm reasonbly positive on nursing. . .

Job Story: Want to be a Hated Male Nurse?....nurse

thank god i got out of nursing school before i have to suffer through all this "stress". no wonder there's a nursing shortage. it's not like that there is no supply for the high demand. there's definitely a supply they're just smart not to be practicing. it's this pointless bickering that nurses -- male and female -- put on each other, that potential great nurses who actually care -- male or female -- get out of the profession. WHERE'S THE LOVE? I was student at at a CDP program, and I experienced all these things that are mentioned in this site within only a few weeks while enrolled in the nursing program. I thought I was paranoid about not having the same treatment as the rest of my classmates. turns out i was right all along. and for all these talk about making tons of money in this so called profession, ever wonder why former porn stars, prostitutes, enter this profession eagerly? it's because they're used to being screwed for money, that is, if those nurses who are only in it for the money are no different than being a whore. and to those who are not whores but are great nurses, you're only grat because you have no life. you're the perfect servant. you know how to anticipate you're patient's needs except for your own. this may sound harsh but it's reality and the truth. thought i can make a diffrence but apparently not in this b------t profession. and to those who do want to make a difference, there are other ways to do about it, give to charity, volunteer, become a philantropist, etc.

Job Story: Want to be a Hated Male Nurse?....nurse

im wondering first of all where jeff, a straight guy who submitted a text on 2-14-2003 managed to see a gay man "working his a$$ off on all fours..." this comment is invalid. why are we even discussing the fact that some nurses are gay men...so are politicians, attorneys, plumbers, factory workers, physicians etc. the fact is that there are gay people working everywhere, just as there are black people, white people, latino and arab people...lets see then there are the christians that have jobs as well, some muslims, jews, hindus etc. the workplace is very diverse, nursing seems to be becoming that way increasingly faster. the fact of someone being gay or not should be irrelevant.
i have found that in the hospital setting (acute care and intensive care unit) there seems to be a more 'team' atmosphere...almost a family feeling is with most of my team members. we all try to keep patients our top priority. nurses working well with our staff physicians, technicians working with nurses and physicians- we all work great as a team together. if one of my staff members has a patient going bad, for example, i see the other nurses scrambling to relieve this nurse of his or her other patients and provide assistance. i hear dialogue with my team members...if one of them gets a patient whose condition may be a new experience for their nurse....i hear the other nurses offering advice and knowledge about the condition, or medication. some of my nurses are not comfortable with hanging dopamine...ive never known it to be a problem, there is always someone around who does feel comfortable. my staff nurses seem to be eager to help each other in any way when it is needed. most of them have from two to five patients and one nurses weakness is another one's strength... i guess i just need to be thankful to work with such a wonderful group of people.
and just to add... we are a team made up of bi*ches and a$$holes, some are just plain wh*res, others are described by some as being too 'getto' (whatever that means...i think it is like being too black or something) but my point is we are very diverse some with lpn license some with msn behind our names. but the bottom line is that we cover each other's a$$es when needed and pull together when conditions call for it...no one said nursing was easy, and god knows we cant be friends with everyone at work but we do our work and do it professionally. i think the night we had 9 codes in 12 hours on our two floors...and only lost one patient (which was an expected loss) i really realized that we have a hell of a team. that particular morning i left work about 15 minutes early...and as i passed by the 4th floor in the elevator i heard another code being called over the paging system.... i did not mind leaving, because i left my patients in great hands...the hands of people that care!
Sorry you have had such a bad experience. I have been in nursing for 30 years and I have rarely experienced what you describe - probably no more often that female nurses. It seems as though with you it is a matter of attitude. If you expect a situation to be bad, it will be. Try going into a situation with an open mind and see what happens.

Hey David Thomas. No one said they "expected" a situation to be bad it just is/was and maybe you should move to France.

i am currently a male rn student. I have seen the "cliques" form already in school. It does not bother me. They are not the one's that have to feed my family, neither do the gays. It is sad to see some one that is supposed to be a professional use such vulgar language with a closed mind. if more nurses concentrated on themselves and theirpatients instead of what nurse x was doing, they wouldnt have such a hard time.

This writer has it right. I was a union electrician before becoming a nurse. As an electrician, we had a strong brotherhood and we stood together and played hardball to get our share of the pie and the guy who raised his fist the most for his brothers was elected as local chairperson because we knew he would fight for all his brotherans.

Shame shame shame on all you loser apologists who dare tell the writer of said above to get a life or leave or get out. When I was an electrician, we had a group of guys who would take care of any apologist that worked against our union. We need more strong men in this profession unlike some of you patsy goo-goo guys who don't want change.
Nursing to me is all about the money. I see my license as a credit card. To buy stuff and to enjoy life. When I go out on tour (my job), I pretend that I am the pimp of these patients. It's all about the benjamins baby. Waiting to purchase my first Escalade. Call me the emcee of nursing and my patients the fans. $$$$$$$$$$$

I thought I'd have to hide who I was, I also thought I'd have to lie...truth be known...my coworkers--all of them, straight, gay, male, female, lesbians, all of us get along great! We love our job and we have teamwork and friendship to show for working in a cooperative and stimulating environment. Any nurse who feels as though they're underappreciated hasn't talked to a patient lately.

Attn: Gay nurse in bible belt. Unfortunatly, the patients are part of the problem too. No other profession feeds attorneys more than healthcare which come from bogus lawsuits. We nurses are constantly put in unsafe situations by hospitals with unsafe patient loads and if we complain, admin. tells us we are not team players which is a cop-out. Most patients go into the hospital with the attitude - I am going to bring suit if someone F____-up as opposed to going in with the hospital with the attitude - I will praise all the wonderful nurses. Why do you think there are all those unpracticing nurses out there? And the doctors are a joke too. Once, I was involved in a suit where a doctor was on-call for another doctor and he F_____-up by not acting. Well, low-and-behold who do you think the doctors tried to blame? The fricking nurses, of course.

Job Story: Want to be a Hated Male Nurse?....nurse

I am 39 father of 3 young sons and have been a nurse for about 3 years. I worked in long-term care, but now I work the graveyard shift on the facility's head injury rehab specialty unit. I, too, have had to deal with women who were a pain in the A$$. But I work with another guy on my shift, and we are the only 2 nurses on the unit. The work is cake, we have many hours of watching SportCenter and eating pizza under our belts. We cover each other for long (sleep) breaks. And we do have the rewards of seeing many of our patients recover enough to leave the unit. I make about 30 bucks an hour for this. If you can ignore the b*tches and find your niche, it ain't so bad. Remember, you can get off the units and climb the ladder faster than those ole' bats anyways... administrators love men!

Job Story: Want to be a Hated Male Nurse?....nurse

Male Nurse in the Southern California Area. I love helping people, don't get me wrong, but I am mainly in this for the money. How can I increase my income?...Anyway...I hate being called a "nurse" it make me feel like I have breasst under my shirt! The term nurse it self is so Darn feminine it's embarrasing. No offense to anyone but I'm not gay. Which is something alot of people assume when theey hear your a nurse. Working with a majority of women can be difficult, to put it lightly. I hope to work independently as a nurse in 5 years, email me if you have any suggestion or leads. I enjoy the work 80% of the time.

Job Story: Want to be a Hated Male Nurse?....nurse
I have been an RN for more than 20 years. The stress, misery and abuse I suffered at the hands of administration, physcians and fellow nurses are a crime against humanity.

Nursing is the only profession that I can think of where the more education, experience and responsibility that you take on actually results in your being paid less than the simple staff nurse makes for putting in his/her normal shift.

I used to be so depressed and emotionally exhausted that I would actually fantize that some car would run a red light and smash into my car so that I could go to the hospital as a patient and NOT have to work and expose myself to the stress of the unit that night. Is this not the most pathetic thing that you have ever heard?

Ah, yes. As a nurse, you are told by administration that you are a "professional" and as such, they expect you to complete professional levels of education, hold pofessional licences, complete professional continuing education each year, adhere to professional standards, assume professional responsibilities and represent your facility/employer as a professional.

Fine and dandy; how about recieving some of the pay and perks of being a "professional"?? No, that is a different story. When you try to stand up for yourself and for your future as a professional, you have no power and no voice. Administration immediately slaps you down and informs you that you are an hourly employee and if you do not like what is handed to you, your job is threatened and you are told that you can "hit the road".

Does this sound like being a true professional? Hell no!! A nurse is only a "professional" as long as it fits the agenda of the doctors and the administrators.

I remember a few short years ago when the stock market was flying high, everbody in the country was making big bucks, most all job catagories were giving raises to their workers, employment was nearly zero throughout the country but nurses???? Our facility gave us a 10% CUT in pay and informed us that we were "lucky" because some hospitals were cutting their nurses pay by 15% or more. My fellow nurses would not put up a fight and simply shug their shoulders and say "Well, at least we HAVE a job" Of course you HAVE a job you moron, there isnt any other person with a brain in their heads who would WANT this job!!

I used to become so depressed about being a nurse. Like many other nurses, I hated it beyond the meaning of the word. I remember thumbing through the yellow pages trying desperately to identify some job, ANY job wherein I could use my nursing education, skills and knowledge in some profession OTHER than actual nursing.

I searched for more than 10 years to find that niche and finally, I am not even really sure how, I actually DID find something that I thought would get me out of the hospital and into a normal, healthy life.

At first, I tried to calculate how little I could get by on. Like all other nurses, I had been trained and brainwashed into believing that I had to be an employee to find work. I intially had to get past that mentality and, I admit, it was a tough process for me.

I figured that if I could only make $500 per week, I could eke out a life for myself. I began my new business and used my nursing skills and knowledge every day and with every client.

I started out with virtually NO recognition and nobody knew of me or of my service. I found out immediately that there really WAS a demand for what I had to offer. The really wierd thing was that NO other nurse was offering my service!! Once I got the word out there, the telephone calls began to flood in.

My first (full) year of working on my own, I was shocked that I actually matched what I had made as a nurse working in a hospital with more than 20 years of experience. My secound year, I made $75,000. I am now headed into the beginning of my forth year and believe it or not, I am actually making what the US Dept of Labor lists as the average income of a Internal Medicine and OB/GYN doctor!!

For the first time in my miserable career as a nurse, I actually FEEL like a professional, am treated as a professional by other professionals and EARN professional pay.

I am in the process of writing a book on my experiences. My book will give other nurses a step by step guide on how to start their own business and begin a wonderful new life for themselves. A life rich with opportunity that will allow them to still work as a nurse but without all the emotional and physical pathology than comes with the traditional "pigeon hole" positions designed for nurses by doctors and hospital administrators (to line their own pockets and finance their own rich lifestyles).

My book will not be finished for a few months but anybody interested in hearing about it when it is completed may email me.

I wish each of my fellow nurses the opportunity to have a quality of life and not have to start over with years of education and retraining to find it. Please do not dispair, the answers truly are out there, if you just know where to look.
Job Story: Want to be a Hated Male Nurse?....nurse

I am a senior BSN student. I will finish my degree, pass my NCLEX, work one year, make provisions to maintain my licensure and then run like hell to another professional school. Probably pharmacy maybe medicine. Being a man in nursing is not for this man. Too much stress and more stress. It is a woman's profession and I accept this fact. My education has provided me with a wealth of knowledge and I don't regret my BSN program but I would not encourage men to go into nursing. Reality is real and it's a female profession.
