Re: If I could afford to quit...

I work for the USPS at a P&DC in Washington, there are two main P&DC (Processing & Distribution Centers) in Washington, one in Seattle and one in Spokane.
I am a Casual Mailhandler which has a host of complications that the "Regular" employees don't have to even worry about. For one, I make a wage which is ten dollars an hour with an eighty cent night time differential, so I basically make eleven dollars an hour. A career (or as I refer to them "a regular") starts out making roughly thirteen dollars an hour at my location, where a TE (temporary employee) makes roughly fourteen an hour.
My wage isn't particularly the issue since I feel its fairly competitive for my location and I don't think I could do much better in the private sector. My issue is job security. As a casual I have no Postal Union securities, I can loose my job at any point in time, if a supervisor is having a bad day it is possible for me to be on the street. To make it worse, according to the contract(s) a casual can only be a mailhandler for six months in a year and only a clerk for six months in a year. Which means, in theory, I could work year around switching every January and July, however, depending on what upper management is in the mood for, I have a definite possibility of loosing my job every six months. It is hard to pay bills when you don't know if your going to be able to pay the rent 'cause you don't know if you are going to have a job the next month. I have already lost my job once because of such stupidity, and was unemployed for several months.
Technically, I am not a full time employee. "Regulars" don't understand what I mean when I say this, so let me explain. Even though I may work 40-70 hours in a given week, I have no benefits. When I say no benefits, I mean no benefits. No sick leave, no annual time off, no health, no retirement, no 401k, nothing. As a casual I have no benefits, and no union support.
In my particular situation I happen to be a full time student. So not only do I have to work graveyards, I am usually attending school during the daytime, and when I'm not attending school I have to be studying or doing some form of homework. No rest for the wicked.
As a casual, being in the situation where I can be fired at any time, it means I have to do everything and anything that is necessary to get the job done. Basically said, I have to work three to ten times harder then any regulars, cause if I don't, I'm unemployed and they will hire some other casual who is willing to do it until they get so drained they are forced to quit or are laid off at the next convenient time slot. Oh, and when I say laid off, I'm not talking about a good two months notice or a two week notice. The last group of lay offs happened in December. The casuals were informed on December 23 that there last day would be December 26, oh, and by the way, Merry Christmas! Yet if I quit without giving a two week notice, bye bye good reference, doesn't matter I busted my ass for God knows how long for them, no sir! You didn't give us a two week notice, even though last time we ditched you on the side of the road we gave you the HONOR of giving you four days notice. No sir, if you don't give us a two week notice we can't give you a good referal, you certainly wouldn't be elligble for rehire. No no no.
You might say I'm a little bitter.
So while I'm busting my ass for roughly half to a third (once you count in annual, sick leave, and the benefits its probably a quarter) of a "regulars" wage, not knowing if I'm going to have a job tomorrow, I get the pleasure of watching regulars stand around all night because the MANAGEMENT is to candy ass to do anything about it. Whether or not they don't have the authority to do anything about it because of the blasted union, or whether they just lack the balls, I'm not sure. Probably a little of both. The union backs up the worthless workers so you have to ask exactly what is the supervision suppose to do, eh?
Theres a specific individual at our facility that does absolutely nothing. When I see him move more then five bags in a night, I realize he really over extended himself. And I'm not exagerating, I'm not joking, and this is in no way funny. Five bags, and I'm very serious.
So where is the accountability? Why isn't supervision doing anything about this? Why isn't the union standing up and saying that they need to fire some of these people. Lazy ass bastards are taking away from the benefits of other workers and pulling down the company as a whole. If you fire the POSs and hire good workers you could employ a far less percentage of individuals and save the company a considerable amount of money. AND MAYBE WE WOULD HAVE THE DAMN DEFICIT!
So, you, regulars, when your bitching about how bad you have it or how much shit you have to deal with, just remember that you have a dependable job, with government benefits, and as long as people are mailing shit you have job security.
I don't even want to have a job at the USPS long term, I'm just trying to pay the bills until I get done with college and I don't even have that security.
