Job Story: Journalist.....rewarding, but very political

I am 14 and I have been seriously thinking of doing journalism for along time. I have always loved to read and write. When my brother-law was sent to Baghdad, to serve in the U.S. Army I watched the news alot to keep up with what was going on over there. They showed the jounalist and reporters on the front lines telling us what was happening.
I was wondering if some one were to become a journalist like you, if they would have the choice to travel around for their stories, and what they would get paid to do something like that. I appreciate your time, and would be very pleased in you responded back.

Hm... join the party or get fired? Sounds like something that might happen in red China. But since you are an American, you must be referring to the Radical Right. People in America need to wake up... take a good hard look at the small number of extremists running amok and trying to reshape the country into their version of paradise. These narrow minded fools will run the country to the ground.

Job Story: Journalist.....rewarding, but very political

I currently work as a reporter for a 45,000 circulation daily in Southern California. I've been at this paper for about 18 monts and plan to leave within a year. I like the business, it's fun, rewarding and best of all, in some cases, you feel like you're making a difference. However, it can be taxing on your personal life, especially if you're in a situation like mine where you would have to put in 50-60 hour weeks with no overtime pay. While demanding I work these long hours, my immediate bosses, my editor and the city editor actually are great. They're understanding, they work with me to get the story right and for the most part, their input is appreciated. True, they are making more money than I am, but I feel they are in the same boat because I think their boss is putting enormous pressure on them. The drawback in this profession, is that I don't see any financial rewards. Even if I'm at the top of my field within five years, I'd be making possibly $70,000 a year. But I see too many journalists, good ones who are tough-nosed and can write like angels, making around $45,000 and $50,000 a year, after more than 10 years in the business. Teachers make more than that for Christ's sake. So, within a year, I plan to leave this business and enter another field where the financial rewards are greater. I don't want to be 40 and bitter because I've felt unappreciated and underpayed for all the hard work I've done.

I am a 16 year-old student and I'm trying to find the pros and cons about a career in Journalism. This site has shown me that I should be careful before deciding a career in the Journalism Field. I always knew it would be very stressful but I never knew how underpaid journalists are, this is a big topic I should think about before ruining my other career opportunities. I think other people should read this article and definitely think about everything that you had to go through before making a big mistake.

Job Story: Journalist.....rewarding, but very political

I know that the field of journalism is a tough one, and i know that a good story is bound to take time and be taxing on the personal life, but if the job is rewarding, and if you feel good about what you are doing, then i definately think that it's not a field to discover altogether. I'm from Sydney, in Australia, and am studying journalism as my major at university. I am highly interested in this field, and although I am mainly looking at becoming an entertainment journalist, i can also see that there are other fields that can be entered into through journalism. A journalism course, for example, can get you into such fields as researching. A journalist's main perogative is research, where would the story come from if there was no research conducted?
All in all though, i do feel blighted by this article. I think perhaps that the career may not have been the one for you, but i also feel that the fact that you stayed with the job for so long may have had an imput into why you don't like it so much anymore.
Anyways, good luck with the newspaper thing, my dream is to be the editor of a magazine someday, for it to be my own would be pure bliss
I realise this article was written some time ago,but I'll take my chances.I am planning to go on a graduate degree on journalism next year and right now I'm in the stressful process of writing my applications.I haven't had any experience on the field so I find really hard answering in 'why I want to be a journalist',I just do..or at least I think I do.I am mainly concerned about the good points of being in the field, however any information I can get will be really helpful.I would be more than grateful if you took the time to contact me.Thank you.

I enjoyed this because I've lived it. Everything you said is true. I can't remember how many times I've sat on a good story because an advertiser might be upset or pull his advertising bucks out of a small paper's cash flow. No one, but no one, stood for any principals or integrity.

When I worked at a small Florida newspaper, I must have worked at least 70 hours a week. It almost cost me my future wife and my health. I was expected to come up with my own story ideas, write them, report them and collect the data, and edit the material myself. The publications' editor just sat at the computer and did the computer layout...

Journalism is for wannabe actors. You're correct in that your gargantuan ego was the root of your downfall.

It all comes down to your looks and voice. Forget about credibility. Those days are over. The world has no place for any more Jim Lehrers, Andy Roonies, Wolff Blitzers etc. Journalists will do anything to report a story, fact or fiction. They're worse than lawyers.

You can't do anything about your voice, so it's time for you to get some plastic surgery, hon. But don't feel bad - virtually everyone in Hollywood has had some work done. Maybe a face lift will do the trick. A little nip here, a little tuck there....hmmm? So what's wrong with that? Besides, there are too many TV stations nowadays. Anyone with a dish will tell you that 90% of the channels are unwatchable. If all else fails you can always sleep with your boss. How else do you think Barbara Walters ended up where she is with that annoying Brooklyn accent? With the exception of Joan Rivers, who has had more work done than Bawbawa Wawtews?

Don't know why you didn't come clean (on an ANONYMOUS site no less) and admit the party trying to make you sign-on w/ them at gunpoint were Victicrats (aka democraps) 89% of journalists are liberals and the bias swings that way.
