Hotel Prices

I keep hearing about 4 star hotels at 2 star prices in Chile and Argentina,
yet everytime I look at a decent hotel it seems to be approx $200. I
thought there were bargains to be had especially in Argentina. Anyone know
a travel agency with a website that can get us nice rooms that are not based
on the US Dollar?
PS....we are going end of Jan. and I also only see quotes through Dec 2003
Thanks
Mickie

Re: Hotel Prices

Where are you? There's at least one travel agent here in Chicago with lots
of connections in Argentina, and I'm sure that they could get you better
deals than the $200 rate you are encountering.

Here are two recommendations of my own, which may or may not be to your
taste. Both in Buenos Aires, and both of which I've stayed at three times:

Hotel Crillon, on the Avenida Santa Fe, facing the Plaza San MartÃ_n. About
100 rooms, a large buffet breakfast (unusual in Argentina), rates probably
somewhere between $100 and $200 a night. (That's what they were when I was
there in 2000; they may have come down with the devaluation of the peso.)
They have a Web site, but I don't remember the URL.

Ulises Recoleta Suites, in the elegant Recoleta neighborhood, on Ayacucho
street just off the Avenida Alvear. Fewer than 30 rooms (often fully booked,
or I would have stayed there on at least one more occasion), continental
breakfast served either in the small lobby or in your room (kitchenettes in
all rooms, with flatware, dishes, etc.). Rates a little lower than at the
Crillon, and recently offering a special at about $50 a night for stays of
three nights or longer. They also have a Web site, and I confess I don't
remember it, either.

There are hundreds of hotels in Argentina at less than $200 a night. I
happen to like these two, but there are plenty that are a lot less costly.

Contact me by e-mail if you have other questions that I might be able to
help you with.

Re: Hotel Prices

Mickie,

Just out of curiosity, are you most interested in the luxury of a 4 star
hotel, or just a nice, conveniently located, safe, reasonably priced place
to stay? Every time I go to Bs As, I rent an apartment by the week, and you
can't beat the price. It's in a safe building downtown with security, and
is very conveniently located to everything downtown has to offer, and is
also very close to the San Martin subway station. If any of this sounds
like something you might be interested in, let me know!

Re: Hotel Prices

Hi Shaun
To be honest, I do like the luxury of a 4 star but of course it must also be
in a safe area. To me, that's a small part of making my vacation special. I
like all the ammenities and attention usually offered in a 4 star.
Thanks,
M.

There are no unsafe areas in the widespread Buenos Aires hotels, even
in "half a star hotels", as a friend of mine likes to say. In the 4
stars level you are in very civilized neighbourhoods, can bet. Any of
those listed here are excellent.

Re: Hotel Prices

The Dazzler Hotel is a 4 star hotel. I've seen prices for this hotel
go as low as US$25 plus 21% VAT per night (but I've never seen it that
low again), but you needed to book through a travel agency or an
Internet travel site such as Expedia.com.

http://www.dazzlerhotel.com/

The lowest advertised price that I can now find for the Dazzler Hotel
is US$35 plus 21% VAT through this Buenos Aires based agency.

http://www.argentinago.com/default.php

For this discount price, you'll need to pay for the entire hotel stay
in advance (similar to Expedia.com). When I've used Argentina-Go's
services, I paid them for the hotel through PayPal.Com. They
charged me an extra 3%, but discounted the daily rate to US$40
inclusive of all taxes. I had concerns about paying for the hotel
room in advance, but Argentina-Go turned out to be a very reputable
agency. In fact, they helped me out on my other travel plans when I
arrived in Argentina.

In my recent research for the best hotel prices in Buenos Aires, it
seems a flat US$40 is the lowest price (if you call the hotel directly
or book through their website, the room prices are between US$50-130)
available for a four star hotel. A couple of days ago, I found
another Argentina travel agency Internet site that was offering rooms
at the 4 star Wilton Hotel for only US$40 inclusive of all taxes. I
can't recall the Internet address for that particular travel agency
site at this time.
