Job Story: fired for med error.....new grad nurse

sorry to hear it, however the whole dam profession is screwed up. we are not considered human, we are supposed to be these infalible robots who also have to be caring, friendly, and compassionate. what other profession demands as much. do yourself a favor, get out while you are young. do the easy, self-gratifying thing, be selfish, get every weekend, holiday, & summer off, be a teacher

as a fairly new nurse myself, I feel your pain. On our pod, meds are given late all the time....mainly because pharmacy will not send our meds up as they are supposed to. We call and call and it gets us no where!
If this place won't do right by you then somewhere else will hire you fast....there is a nursing shortage. Bad nurses, I mean BAD nurses have jobs. Good nurses aren't a dime a dozen anymore, and hospitals know it. You will have a job in no time.

Sorry to hear this happened to you but..welcome to the world of nursing! This is how you get treated. If they want to get rid of a nurse they will fire you for whatever even for something you didn't do. Nurses give meds late ALL THE TIME. Often it just can't be avoided because of pharmacy issues, unforseen crisis on the floor, psycho family member issues that keep you from doing your actual JOB..on and on. It happens. It's reality and they KNOW this. But if they decide they wanna fire you for some bullshit like this oh well. The shitty nurses can practically kill patients and nothing is said or done. Good nurses give meds a little late and they are run out the door. This is how it is. They de-moralize new nurses from the door. Now you see why there is such a shortage, especially of GOOD NURSES. Do yourself a favor and get out of nursing and get a career that doesn't run you in the ground and suck the life out of you before you get too deep into nursing and invest too much time in it.

nursing errors seem to be judged upon a buddy system in the nursing world. welcome to the machine this is why a "shortage" exists. i wonder if the nursing shortage is more about the nurses who choose not to work in the current conditions, rather than the so proclaimed shortage. ya know, keep them coming...tell them what they wanna hear...warm bodies to appease society. the sad reality is that our society suffers when our experienced nurses leave the profession because of their voices being unheard. studies have shown the dangers associated with working with a skeleton crew of nurses, but still it remains in our hospitals and ltc facilities in the usa. renovations always seem to take priorty over actual pt/staff ratio, why is that? i feel for young nurses starting out, my best advice is to learn how to grow thick skin fast, and as you grow your skin...find another career. i wish someone warned me when i decided to become a nurse, but everyone...who had no idea what nursing involved, encouraged me.

Thumbs down

I hope you now realize that you cannot be truthful about harmless mistakes. They will happen throughout your career. Admitting them when they are not a big problem creates a problem to which the low end administrators you report to must respond. Take your medicine and learn from it. Move on and know you cannot trust any of your supervisors with facts they don't need.

I have been a registered nurse now for four years and just let me say on behalf of the nursing profession how sorry I am that this drastic, judgemental, even cruel decision happened to you. After educating yourself at nursing school, all that study... I too have made medication errors, (I think any nurse who says they haven't is lying). The person or persons who made this decision seemed to have made a very vicious decision. What I would like to suggest to you, when your feeling a bit stronger, is to confront this person, in a calm way and ask why? Perhaps it may help with all your questions you have now going around in your head and may help you to grieve and to heal. Good luck in future.

Thumbs up

I have been in nursing 40 years, and believe me it never gets any better! My staying power was to document every thing that was told to me during the incident. Legally if you have a diary and they don't you prevail. At least three times during my career my "notes" saved my bucket. I don't dwell on the fact that the usuper got what was coming to them, it does no good. you don't believe that last statement do you?
However most of the time if you keep calm, this too shall pass. Nursing has been good to me but I can tell you from experience that nurses are like spiders, they eat their own. Good luck.

Consider yourself fortunate and change your career now before
you get in any deeper. It doesn't get better over the years. It
only gets worse.

Agreed - get out now! I did after four years of hell and I wish I had done so sooner.
