Job Story: rampant sexual harrasment..........Adjunct English Professor

Get ahold of the emails and send them to the EEOC with an anonymous complaint.

You said this is in South Florida? Is it Palm Beach Community College? I worked there for a year, and saw students being yelled at by administrators and even openly laghed at. I've seen other administrators wander the hallways with nothing to do and come in late, not show up some days, blow off meetings and appointments, take students for "trips" and even more!

I would do what you recommend, but I just don't think the EEOC would do anything about it. There have been so many complaints made against people and I've seen so much and nobody gets fired or reprimanded even. I've seen people hired for 50 grand jobs who do nothing and are way under-qualified...people who don't meet the college's posted requirements for jobs, but still get them because they know someone on the committee who's doing the hiring or has pull.

Palm Beach Community COllege

This is all true...that it is a truly horrible place to work or go to as a student....Since there is no competition for students in the way of other colleges locally, administration there knows that they can essentially promote from within for all positions regardless of ability. Also students suffer from the administration's lack of professionalism.

Don't Hate, Educate!

I have been working at this highly respected institution for a year and what I have read here is simply not true. Professors at this college are highly qualified, many with Ph.D.s, JDs and Ed.Ds., many with decades of experience. We are ALL held accountable for what we do here and there are plenty of records to prove that. At the end of each semester we are required to turn in to our respective Deans grade sheets, attendence records, etc. We are also reviewed at least once per year by the Dean if we are full-time faculty or by the Department Chair if we are adjuct faculty. With regard to books and materials, it is not PBCC's responsibility to offer books, as they are sent FOR FREE from publishers who want us to use their texts in our classes. As far as materials, what materials are these people talking about? Each classroom, at least in Palm Beach Gardens, is a "smart" classroom, with a computer, projector, screen, and so forth, and therefore, can play DVDs, show PowerPoint slide shows, go to the web for online demonstrations, etc. PBCC is a wonderful place to work. I have not witnessed any sexual harrassment or disrespect for the student body. There are processes in place for students to complain, and believe me, when they do, such situations are taken very seriously. With regard to someone with a GED determining the credentials of someone with a Ph.D., this is also not true, as the Human Resources department in Lake Worth, which handles the hiring process, is overwhelmed with employees with Ph.D.s and Master's degrees in their respective fields. What I've read here sounds like the words of disgrutled adjuncts, who, like in every educational institution, overworked and underpaid. My advice to them is find a tenure track position at PBCC or another institution and to not try to derail the wonderful things that PBCC is doing for not only its students, but also its faculty and employees.
