It is about the patients. You can scream, you can cry, you can complain, call staffing, call supervisors, be miserable and then quit- administration doesn't care, but the patient in that room cares if I'm out and the nurse coming in is gonna sit on her rear and do nothing for them. The big picture is clear, but focusing on what you can do for your patients during your shift gets me through it.
Bottom line, nursing isn't just about patient care, it is about seeing how much of your own butt you can cover with charting and documentation. I think we all know that. I personally really love the days when it isn't crazy and I get to take care of my patients the way I really feel they deserve, but some days I have to stick to the basics.
Sometimes when things are bad you just have to look on the bright side of something. Sure it is bad, there are jobs that are worse, pay a lot less, and aren't as flexible as far as scheduling. I count my blessing where I can find them.
