four kids -- how to do it?

A neighbor asked me (because I just came off a cruise, apparently)
about cruising with a family, and since i don't have kids, I'm asking
the group. They have four kids, and want advice -- that's too
many for one room, right? Do any ships have two-bedroom suites?
Or are conneting rooms the way to go? Any advice appreciated. TIA

A lot depends on the ship and on the ages of the kids. They could take
two adjoining cabins, which would give them two bathrooms. Some people
will take an outside or balcony cabin for themselves and an inside
cabin across the hall for the kids. Some ships also have family
cabins, but I am not familiar with them.

Re: four kids -- how to do it?

Voyager of the Seas has family cabins for six and lots for the kids to
do... a great family ship.

We're doing it with 3 kids (one older in his early 20's)... wife and me
have a balcony cabin, kids have an inside promenade view. That ended up
cheaper than the family cabin, gave us some privacy and two bathrooms.

One or two might be accidents, but with four -
they clearly already know "how to do it".

Two connecting cabins would be wise if the children are small..If they are
old enough to have an inside cabin across the hall from the parents' cabin,
then that would be one solution. Some ships have family cabins..The T/A
should be able to advise them the best route to take.

Re: four kids -- how to do it?

They need to speak with a Travel agent to find out what works out best for
them. Many lines have different rules as to who can be in a room based on
age, so technically, parents in one room and kids in another may not work.

Connecting rooms are rare, but as others have said, across the hall is what
lots of people do.

Even a too bedroom suite may not allow for six people, again depending on
the ages.

Re: four kids -- how to do it?

All depends on the ship and how much money they want to spend. When we
were on the Granduer of the Seas, we had two connecting inside cabins.
We just came back from the Grand Princess and had 4 in one cabin, with
2 pull down beds. Kids are 10 and 12 and had no problems. As a family,
we have to control the costs, but if we had the money to spluge, then
we would go for the suite.

How many bathrooms does the family cabin have?

Yes, but many people book it with one adult in each room and once they
are on the ship they do as they please.

I have never cruised with my kids, they were all adults by the time we
got addictedd to cruising. If I were the one cruising with kids, I
would go with two cabins, so I would have two bathrooms.

YIKES! Tough for six to get ready with just one bathroom.

Re: four kids -- how to do it?

I'm with you, Paradise. For cost purposes, a room that sleeps 4 or even
5 (Carnival has larger cabins with this ability)....would have to
suffice. If it meant all of us being able to be on a cruise together
and we LIKED one another enough to share a cabin...well, it's do-able.
On the other hand, if most of these kids are GIRLS and pre-teens at
that....I might reconsider. LOL But, seriously, it can be done. You
just have to be creative with "bathroom rationing" and figure that
except for sleeping, you probably won't all be in the cabin at the same
time during the day much of the time, at least. But, now that I think
back, the original poster mentioned there were four KIDS, right? So,
there would definitely need to be a suite or some sort of connecting
cabins...or if some of the kids were older, let them have their own
across from you. Sheesh. This is beginning to sound complicated and
worse yet, expensive! But, hey, if they have the money, I'm sure the
ships will come up with the cabins! Best if luck!

kbe,

During the 2004 Spring Break, my wife and I took two grandsons with us
on cruise on the Carnival Conquest. We had a single outside cabin. Our
oldest son, his wife, their three children (2 boys, 1 girl), and the
wife's nephew went on the same cruise. They had two connecting outside
cabins. It was great. The kids ranged in age from 3 to 11 at the time.
In fact, the oldest, now 12 1/2, asked me the other day when we would
go back to Montego Bay and Jimmy Buffet's Margarettaville.

The ten of us had such a great time in 2004 that we have booked
reservations on the NCL Sun for the 2006 Spring Break. This time, my
wife, I, and the two grandsons will be in a balcony cabin and our son,
his wife, and children will be in two connecting balcony cabins.

Can't wait.

John

Re: four kids -- how to do it?

I think that would depend on the ages...I had my 3 kids with me last year,
and got them a cabin next to mine and it worked out fine. The oldest two
slept on the beds, and the 6 year old on a cot.(My oldest two were 17 and
14 ) We sometimes shared bathrooms in both cabins, but otherwise there was
enough space to sleep , change, keep the luggage, ect. We could have
accommodated another small child easy enough.
I would tell your friend to consider Carnival - they are very child
friendly. They offer daycare, a lot of kid activities, and Camp
Carnival..which my 6 year old enjoyed. Also less likely to run into other
cruisers may not enjoy children as much as your friend must !

That is what I was thinking. LOL Have you noticed that men spend
entirely too much time in the bathroom? If the bathroom has a TV and
Pizza Hut delivers they would never come out.

This is why I "must" have at least two bathrooms in my house, could
never manage with one.

Mike, I agree, a T/A would be able to figure out the best way for them to
cruise..
Connecting cabins are not that rare, we have a cabin that connected to ours
several times on our cruises..I didn't pay attention as to which ships since
we never had to book them for ourselves. Just noticed the extra locked door
in the cabin.
