Speaking of those "bargain stores" in ports and otherwise...

There's another store I've recently added to my list of "regulars".
It's in the next town over not too far from Target. It's The Dollar
Tree. Some would call it a "junk store", and granted, some of their
stuff is. But, if you've got the time and fortitude, I think there are
some gems to be had in that place. Their 2 for $1.00 greeting cards,
themselves, are worth the trip. Same with various household supplies
and lunch bag items. Again, you have to be in the mood, especially if
the place is crowded or the lines are long. But, I think overall,
particularly for folks watching their pennies or looking for some
"stock-up" bargains, this is the place to go. I feel a lot more
satisfied walking out of a store like this with several bags and a
small dent in my pocketbook than I do even a place like Costco where
you're forced to buy everything in SuperSize. And Costco just doesn't
have those little items you sometimes want.

I think if a Dollar Tree were close to the port and I needed film or a
hairbrush I wouldn't hesitate stopping there. In fact, when my husband
and I took the Reno Fun Train last year and he discovered he forgot to
pack his underwear and socks, we walked and walked looking for a
"practical store" (something besides a casino)...and lo and behold, we
came upon The Dollar Tree. It saved the day. So, I doubt that most
cruise passengers make the local Wal*Mart as their destination site,
nor is it highlighted in yellow on their itinerary.

We have one of those too. I have used them on many occasions when I
couldn't find what I wanted elsewhere. I have also used them when
elsewhere was more expensive for the same "stuff"

Dick,
HEB is a huge grocery chain and is all over Texas....We have one a block
away that previously was an Albertson's..We used to have Piggly Wiggly,
Handy-Andy and Albertson's but HEB has pretty well put them all out of
business. Their biggest competitor right now would be Wal*Mart, I think...
Albertson's did not sell wine when they first came to SAT..(they are
supposedly owned by a Mormon family) but after HEB's competition, they
started to sell it too.. They even built a brand new store, but left before
it ever opened and their locations ended up being bought up by HEB. The
brand new building still stands, boarded up and vacant.

Lindsay, those stores seem to be springing up everywhere and are called
Dollar Tree, Dollar Store, etc. Another store, Big Lots. has appeared around
some shopping centers.

Then check out the 99 cent store, Ruben.

Sorry...couldn't resist.

I like dollar store finds for special events. They had some incredibly tacky
but large, football-shaped/painted serving pieces out at Super Bowl time
that were fun for making a themed contribution to the ubiquitous game day
gathering. On a dreary day in February, I co-hosted a 50th b'day lunch for
14 at a favorite Tex-Mex restaurant. We weren't planning to decorate, but
when I went to the dollar store for something else, my eye was drawn to some
$1 heavy plastic margarita glasses with a tropical flower thingie on the
stem. That gave me an idea...lo and behold, there were $1 plastic coated
tablecloths with tropical flowers to match. Add $1 leis, some packages of
tropical colored solid napkins, some fresh tropical flowers to adorn the
cake, and presto! With the restaurant's cooperation, for low cost, we
by-passed the Mexican look (festive enough, but very ordinary here) and
created a tropics-inspired vibe that changed the whole ambiance of our
lunch! (Lucky I had extra leis when the waiters wanted to wear them, too.
They thought this was fun, too...or maybe it was fun-ny seeing a bunch of
"old ladies" get such a charge out of being silly?!)

Re: Speaking of those "bargain stores" in ports and otherwise...

Diana
I buy my barrettes at the Dollar Store. On one cruise while on the
elevator a lady admired the one I was wearing. A butterfly. As I had
brought the whole card with me I told her if she would be at X the next
day I would give her one. She was there and I gave her two. I could
always go back for more.
