Speaking of those "bargain stores" in ports and otherwise...
There's another store I've recently added to my list of "regulars".
It's in the next town over not too far from Target. It's The Dollar
Tree. Some would call it a "junk store", and granted, some of their
stuff is. But, if you've got the time and fortitude, I think there are
some gems to be had in that place. Their 2 for $1.00 greeting cards,
themselves, are worth the trip. Same with various household supplies
and lunch bag items. Again, you have to be in the mood, especially if
the place is crowded or the lines are long. But, I think overall,
particularly for folks watching their pennies or looking for some
"stock-up" bargains, this is the place to go. I feel a lot more
satisfied walking out of a store like this with several bags and a
small dent in my pocketbook than I do even a place like Costco where
you're forced to buy everything in SuperSize. And Costco just doesn't
have those little items you sometimes want.
I think if a Dollar Tree were close to the port and I needed film or a
hairbrush I wouldn't hesitate stopping there. In fact, when my husband
and I took the Reno Fun Train last year and he discovered he forgot to
pack his underwear and socks, we walked and walked looking for a
"practical store" (something besides a casino)...and lo and behold, we
came upon The Dollar Tree. It saved the day. So, I doubt that most
cruise passengers make the local Wal*Mart as their destination site,
nor is it highlighted in yellow on their itinerary.
