Any good real estate maps for greater las vegas area? looking for land.

I'm trying to find an area to purchase some land, but need some
geographical information...more than what mapquest or google maps has
to offer. Anyone out there use any mapping service that works great for
them? Or even, have any cities within 200 miles of las vegas that sell
land around $5000/acre? Thanks for your help.

I've been using the GIS system at the Dixie National Forest web site.
We're shopping for land near there and it allows me to map by bodies
of water etc:

http://www.fs.fed.us/r4/dixie/gis/

Land for 5K/acre is available around Cedar City and other points in
Southern Utah. It really kind of depends on your usage. We are
planning to develop off-grid so we don't need access to utilities.
There is a 20 acre plot of land for $37K available 27 miles East of
Cedar City that looked attractive to us, but it turned out to be too
far from the recreational stuff we are trying to get closer to.

Email me if you like and let me know what features you are looking for
in propery and I may be able to point you in the right direction.

You build the house using massive amounts of insulation so you have no
heating/cooling requirement. Then it's 12v appliances combined with
passive and active solar systems. Satellite internet access provides
communications including phone service. Propane and wood provides some
more heating and cooking options (we're designing a killer outdoor
kitchen to include smoker and pizza oven). Diesel generators on-site
for back-up and short term electric needs. Propane freezer and
referigeration is an option we're considering.

Other items include a large collection of fishing poles, banjos and
guitars, guns for shootin' bunnies, massive amounts of high-grade
tequila, a large-scale homebrewing operation, and numerous guest
cabins.

Greg (in (NOT FROM!) Texas) <-- is it June (20-23 at Wynn Las Vegas) yet?

mode of operation it will be a tremendous ripoff."

I know it does.. I'm thinking more along the lines of una-banjoer
though.

But never fear. The only ones who should be afraid are the fish, and
then only the keepers.

We will very likely go with straw bale construction. We considered
Earthship Biotecture as well but it's more labor intensive than I
would want. They do have some great ideas though. I've read that a
well designed earth ship can provide water, food and housing in an
area with as little as 9" of rainfall per year. We'll probably
incorporate some of their ideas.

We are in contact with the owner of a straw bale house that looks to
be right around 2000 sf and includes and indoor lap pool on the sun
porch. It's very cool.

Steve,

I can help you with the design of you outdoor kitchen. I have friends
that have done just what you mentioned. These are people that are very
much into BBQ, smoking and outdoor cooking and have set up some
elaborate kitchens. Best of all, they will share everything they know
for free. Let me know if you're interested and I'll hook you up.

Kurt
