Of course Cyprus is in Europe. It's not just a question of geography,
but of culture. Where do you think people think it is? Africa? The
middle east? To tell the truth, despite not being in either the EU or
EEA (though it is in NATO), a lot of people think of Turkey as Europe
too. (I note the 'Turkish' part of Cyprus wanted to be in the EU too,
despite the successful veto of their Greek Cypriot, uh, neighbours.)

Cyprus is officially considered geographically a part of Asia, as indeed is
Israel, etc., irrespective of way of life.

I see you're right. Israel, I think is more obvious. "Cyprus is part of
Asia" just seems a really odd statement to my ears, no matter the
proximity to the middle east.

so is Crete the end of Europe in that direction? Cyprus looks to
be on the continental shelf of the middle eastern landmass, I
suppose its historical links make us think of it as non asian.

And what about islands like Lesbos, which are practically of the coast
of Turkey?

It's probably the political situation. Probably because of the history,
Greek Cyprus strikes me as more 'European' than some parts of Greece!

I suppose I'd also having a tough time saying that the Canary Islands
are part of Africa, which I'm sure they must be, right? Is Malta not
part of Africa as well?

And what about islands like Lesbos, which are practically of the coast
of Turkey?

It's probably the political situation. Probably because of the history,
Greek Cyprus strikes me as more 'European' than some parts of Greece!

I suppose I'd also having a tough time saying that the Canary Islands
are part of Africa, which I'm sure they must be, right? Is Malta not
part of Africa as well?

I don't think the physical geographical europe is a very strong
concept. It probably wouldn't exist if there were not the
political religious differences. Eurasia seems more logical.

They are indeed, and part of the E.U. Just like Cuerta, Melilla
and the other place on the mainland.

Looks to me as if the shallow water is to Sicily, so Europe.
