My high-rise apartment building in Kuala Lumpur was shaking like a tree in
the wind. There was much screaming and fleeing. Apparently this quake was
less severe than the last one, but everyone seems to agree that this one was
felt more strongly here.

nice to find you here too, Miguel. Yes, should be less severe, being about
8.3 (other sources quote 8.5) Richter against 9 of the 12/26 one. IIRC,
from 5 to 8 times less, in terms of energy released. Anyway it's classified
as a great earthquake. The Hawaii tsunami watch centre has said they are
'very alarmed' and - as little sens it makes - that everyone inside 1000
miles from the epicentre should be evacuated.

Hi Miguel. Any news about Singapore? I am leaving for Singapore in a
week.

My friends in Singapore mostly report not feeling anything, a few said they
noticed it but not much. It's another 200km or so away; I guess that
provides some insulation.

There's a web site that collects reports of how and where quakes are felt -
here's the page for the big one last night:

http://pasadena.wr.usgs.gov/shake/o...im_stats_1.html

(Singapore is on page 2).

There have since been almost a dozen more quakes, and the cumulative effect
(at least for me) seems to be an inability to really feel confidence that
the ground is steady at any given moment. It's quite disconcerting and I am
looking forward to the end of it.

Re: new quake off Sumatra Shores

Isn't the quake (8,3) is a lot stronger than the last one (around 6,
but always reported as close to 9 to make it look big)?

http://www.joevialls.net/subliminal...on/tsunami.html

Well... That pretty much proves that the Richter scale is not the best
way to judge a quake.
