London has best restaurants says US "Gourmet" mag.

Gourmet magazine is reported here to be saying London has best
restaurants. The story does not seem to be on the website (at
least without subscribing) can anyone tell me more?

London's food is 'best in world'
Chef Gordon Ramsay says London has the most amazing produce
London has been dubbed the best place to eat in the world.
Gourmet, America's leading food magazine, says restaurants in
England's capital are far superior to those in Paris, Rome or New
York.

The editors of the magazine, who were in London recently to
sample the food, said they were "blown away" by the city's
cuisine and restaurants.

The magazine, which has a circulation of more than a million, has
devoted its entire March issue to dining in London.

John Willoughby, Gourmet's executive editor, said: "We came to
London because we had been hearing about great chefs and great
products.

"We were hoping to find good food, but we didn't expect to find
so much of it. We were blown away."

One of the restaurateurs praised in the magazine, Fergus
Henderson, chef and owner of St John restaurant in Clerkenwell,
said: "The kind of diversity and gastronomies that you can lay
your hands on in London is happening very quickly and very
impressively."

Celebrity chef Gordon Ramsay, who owns a number of restaurants in
London, said: "Ten years ago we were struggling to become
recognised in the top five.

"We've moved miles and miles ahead of ourselves and I know
there's a lot of chefs in capital that have worked towards this
goal."

He said there has been an improvement because of a surge in chefs
that have travelled the world and returned to London.

"We've got the most amazing produce, and that's not just fine
dining - whether tapas or Chinese," he said.

"The biggest problem is that we are now spoilt for choice. That
is a very healthy problem and a very exciting one."

Re: London has best restaurants says US "Gourmet" mag.

England has always had superior foodstufs -- in the last decades they have
learned how to cook them. Bray is tiny and may not be in downtown London,
but it has two of the best restaurants in Europe. But for many years--
decades really -- London has ben terribly underrated. Oxford, Glasgow, even
Cheltenham have fine three star places. Reputatuions die hard.
BUT and a big BUT! They are brutally exepnsive. They even make Parisians
shudder.

Lots of the people who live there either directly work in London
or have London money. The Fat Duck is remarkable, not for
everyone, but for those interesting in the cutting edge of food
and the application of science to it, its an experience, with
even a few notes of humour. The room, on the other hand, is
pedestrian.

The Waterside Inn is more traditional, working to the classic
rather French style which (elsewhere) looks increasingly out of

London is of course an expensive city, but I've been surprised recently
at some very good food in cheaper restaurants. Our last visit to London,
last weekend, was one example. We dined in Soho, where we'd sometimes
been disappointed by some touristy and overpriced restaurants before.
This time, we went to a spanish restaurant one night, japanese the next.
In both cases, the food was very reasonable (actually, cheap by central
London standards) and excellent. The starter the first night, sopa de
pescado, was as good as anything I've had in spain, and at £3 was
reasonably priced.

What you are saying is true. The most exciting things in the culinary
world are definitely happening in London, at the top end at least. If
this eventually has a bit of flow down effect to the middle range
restaurants, then it will be a good thing, but still the proliferation
of fabulousy shite food lowers the bar overall.

Londoners just need to learn to say no to the crap stuff.

I don't really find it that hard to find decent mid-price restaurants.
Certainly, there are plenty of bad ones still around.

That's good to hear, because I feel that's the weak pint of
London eating, like everything else here, its not usually cheap.
Looked at one bedroom flat with semi river view near docklands
business district £250,000. I'll have to steal some of those gold
paving stones.

Again, I think you are right, some of the places I see tourists
eating, like Garfunkels[1] and those steak houses are pretty poor
as is most fish and chips and most other fast food.
1] I look at some customer review restaurant websites and Gs is
well liked by some tourists, to my surprise.
