Charles feels tortured by Brits, hates Americans
Charles felt 'tortured' over Camilla
LONDON, England (AP) -- Prince Charles complained bitterly in a 1998
interview that the British people had "tortured" him over his relationship
with Camilla Parker Bowles, said an excerpt published Sunday from a
forthcoming book by a BBC journalist.
"I thought the British people were supposed to be compassionate," Charles
said, according to the excerpt printed in The Mail on Sunday newspaper. "I
don't see much of it."
Charles and Parker Bowles are to marry April 8. While initial public
reaction to the announcement of their wedding was subdued, a series of
gaffes in the planning of the event have received mercilessly mocking press
coverage.
Some disapprove of the relationship because Charles and Parker Bowles were
romantically involved while he was married to Princess Diana. The couple are
having a civil wedding -- to be followed by a religious blessing -- because
the Church of England frowns on divorcees remarrying in the church. Both
Charles and Parker Bowles are divorced.
British Broadcasting Corp. television reporter Gavin Hewitt wrote in
excerpts from his forthcoming book "A Soul On Ice: A Life in News," that he
interviewed Charles off camera during a November 1998 visit to Sofia,
Bulgaria.
He said he had pressed the prince about his relationship with Parker Bowles,
asking how Charles wanted it to be defined.
"I don't see any reason why I should define my private life," Charles
responded, according to Hewitt. "All my life, people have been telling me
what to do. I'm tired of it."
"My private life has become an industry. People are making money out of it,"
Charles said. "I just want some peace."
Charles complained that Britons had "tortured" him over the relationship,
although he did not mention Parker Bowles by name, Hewitt reported.
A spokeswoman in Charles' Clarence House office declined to discuss the
report.
"We never comment on private conversations the Prince of Wales may or may
not have had," she said.
Hewitt also wrote that Charles snapped, "We've got nothing to learn from the
Americans," when the journalist said he admired some U.S. modern
architecture. Charles strongly dislikes modern architecture.
"It was more than just an irritation," Hewitt wrote. "I could sense he did
not like the country that had so embraced Diana."
