Cruise Insurance?

Getting ready to book my first cruise and was wondering what the general
consensus is on cruise insurance? Rip-off or life saver?

TIA!

Re: Cruise Insurance?

I've purchased it every time I've booked. Everyone I spoke to before
my first said ALWAYS buy Travel insurance for cruises.

Re: Cruise Insurance?

We just took our first cruise a couple months ago (January). I have an
illness that COULD have prevented us from going. The weather COULD have
prevented us from getting to the ship. Those are the two main reasons we
included insurance but there are a lot of others things that COULD happen
while you're out of the country. Personally, I wouldn't risk not having
travel ins.

Re: Cruise Insurance?

Thanks Badger!

From what I've read it only covers you if you get sick/injured, delays
traveling to get to the ship, etc.

If there is a hurricane, or the like, the cruise ship is obligated to
compensate, right?

Another question, is are guaranteed rooms a good idea?

Thanks!

Re: Cruise Insurance?

I am a hit and miss on insurance meaning that it depends on circumstances.
Cruise in October NY to Bermuda, no flights to miss but took insurance
because we enjoy mo-pedding on the island. Been doing this for many years
without a problem but I do realize that one mistake and I might need medical
evacuation which is a not so small fortune.

January cruise to Panama Canal, took insurance more over concern of weather
and flights out of NY and so forth. Was a 10 day cruise and lot's of sea
time between Florida and Limon first stop so would have been expensive to
join up with ship if weather prevented being there for the sailing. Take the
insurance and always go day ahead.

Re: Cruise Insurance?

Various circumstances would make cruise line probably compensate you but can
be hit and miss also. Also I never take insurance with the cruiseline since
one of the coverages is for default that may be mute if line providing
coverage.

Guarenteed status I presume is what you are taking, usually lower rate with
line assigning you a certain categorey minimum or above. You can have good
or bad luck with this. Bottom line is to check out deck plans and decide if
given the worse cabin you see in that categorey you would still be happy
saving a few bucks then a guarentee can make sense. If not, select your
cabin and pay the price.

Re: Cruise Insurance?

As with any insurance, it's a rip-off if you don't need it and a life saver
if you do. We always get it, but I now only get the insurance that cover me
while on the trip and not the cost of the trip. (CSA and enter a trip cost
of $0). I don't want to get a $20,000 evacuation bill, but I figure I can
afford to lose the cruise money since it's already paid.

Rip-off if you never use it; life saver if you do. Its like house
insurance. Year after year after year I pay $300 a year for house
insurance. Have never used it and hope I never do BUT if I have a
problem then I'll be glad I have it.

The way I look at it is, if it is a burden to purchase insurance then
one should not be going. If it isn't a burden then what's another few
bucks? For the most part a person may spend 4-5K on a cruise. Is another
$150 a big deal?

Buy it. The minute you need it and you have it you'll be glad. Think
about how you will feel if something happens and you're sitting there
with nothing to show for your investment in time and money.

Re: Cruise Insurance?

Believe me, it is worth the money in the long run. I hate bad weather,
illness, death of friend or family member the day we are leaving. We
have had it all & lost loads of money with it.

Then I was told to buy CSA, the best in the business. As far as living
in Cleveland & cruising in the winter for 2 week shots, a blizzard & we
are stuck at the airport not at the port on the ship. So the flight is
cancelled, I phone CSA who tries to get us on another flight & they are
told the airport is closed til further notice, so we are called back on
my cell & told to go home & file the claim for total costs.

We learned that Berkly Insurance (who is cruise line insurance
company)doesn't cover air, bad weather, or medical flights. Access
America cover bad weather but the airport must be closed for 24
hours!!!!! So read what you buy.............

Bought Princess Insurance and was stuck in San Juan with NWA on strike
& the insurance doesn't cover air. Princess gave me the line tha they
just book it not insurance it. So we dropped them as our cruiseline!

We always take cruise insurance and twice have had to use it. Both
times one of us got the flu and couldn't move, making it necessary to
cancel the cruise. Both times we got all our money back, except the
cost of the insurance.

If you have any preexisiting conditions be sure to purchanse you
insurance right away. Most plans you need to buy the insurance between
7 and 10 days of your deposit date. The time varys with each company.

You might want to take a look at insuremytrip.com, you will be able to
compare and price different insurance policies.

I with you on that George. We never take insurance and we cross
our fingers. I figure if I get burnt, it will be a lesson learned. If
not, I've saved a bundle that could be spent elsewhere. I'll have to
check my VISA Travel Card and see if there is any type of insurance
on there.

I'm driving to the port this time and don't foresee any problems
along the way. I'm giving myself a couple weeks to get there, so
if anything bad should come up, we could just fly into Miami instead.

When I hit I-75 in Florida and see all the traffic heading North,
well, you know which way I'll be going. Will be checking weather
a week or so before the cruise as well.

I don't normally reply to my own postings, BUT, after careful
consideration and speaking with a few people that cruise a lot,
I went ahead and took out insurance on the Web through CSA.

Better safe than sorry I suppose, and my cruise isn't until September.
A lot of things can happen between now and then and my cruise is paid
in full.

Re: Cruise Insurance?

The curies line is not required to do anything but put you on a ship for
some number of days. They could said around in circles in the harbor and
count it as a cruise.

Any insurance is only good if you actually need it. My life insurance has
been a rip off for years as I haven't died. My health insurance has done
nothing but cost my company money, I haven't put in a claim, ever, and I've
been with this company for four years.

Would I go without either of those? Of course not.

You need to weigh what coverage's you already have, does your health
insurance cover you where you are going, etc, and see if it's worth it.

Also, read the small print. Delays in getting to the ship may have certain
conditions attached. Being sick may or may not be covered based on how the
policy is written and what's wrong with you, things like that. Every policy
is different.

But no, the ship isn't obligated to do anything but sail around with you
anyplace it feels like.

My experience... they won't stop digging until they find a way to avoid
paying. I used CSA once. They're bunch of Dirt Bags IMO. Big time rip
off. Don't waste your money. Or at least find an outfit more reputable
than CSA.

My health insurance is about the best you can have worldwide.
Retired Army with Tricare Prime and of course the VA. Both share
the costs and it only cost me my annual Tricare premium of $463 for
the family. Sooo, on top of the cruise insurance medical plus my own
medical, I would say I am pretty well covered. There won't be any
military facilities on my cruise but if there was, I would be able to
use them if I had to. Plus, if I ever get stuck someplace, and there
are U.S. Forces flights into and out of the country, I can hitch a ride
on them as well. If not, well KACHING.

The $113 I paid is a bargain for what it covers. If I was flying into
Miami I may not have bought it, but since I am driving, anything can
happen.

Re: Cruise Insurance?

OK, so I should have thought about all the things I want to ask before
sending an email...

What's the best way to ensure the excursions desired?

Besides the normal vacation items, what else are good items to bring?

Do the rooms have phones like hotels so you can call other rooms? Or would
walkie-talkies be better?

I have read somewhere that ship may have stickers for soft drinks, but do
all ships offer something similar? Any offer something for say beer or
wine?

Going hungry is not possible? Or is it?

Thanks again!

Re: Cruise Insurance?

Sorry, one last one (hopefully)...

I am finding the best deals on gotraval.com and mycruisevalue.com. Anyone
have any experiences with either of these? Or have a better one to use?

Re: Cruise Insurance?

Things I would consider on the question of whether or not to buy
cruise insurance are (1) the length of time between the refund
deadline and sailing date, (2) the cost of the cruise (ie., is a $500
Carib cruise may not be worth insuring but a $20,000 world cruise is
another matter) and, (3) the age and general health of the passengers.
Personally, we've never bought insurance because of our age (mid 50s)
and the fact that most of our cruises tend to be last-minute bargains
(tho not always). Mom (82) likes to book far in advance and always
buys insurance, as well she should. Cheers. JOHN

The reason for buying insurqance at your age is actually not so much your
age as your mother's. the insurance from third a=party vendors covers your
need to go back home if mom or a close relative should die or suffer life
threatening injuries. It also pays for lost trip if you get injured while
on a trip. Of course if you average it out you may never need, but need it
once and it is a bargain.

And I hope we won't have to find out either. At least it gives us
peace of mind.

Re: Cruise Insurance?

We used Access America. Had to cancel(medical) and they were effficient,
courteous, and prompt(we received our cancellation check in about 10 days.)

Re: Cruise Insurance?

My seemingly perfectly healthy, 45-year-old husband suffered a stroke 6
weeks ago. In attempting to find the cause, various tests were
ordered, among them a routine chest x-ray. One thing lead to another,
and within a week or so of his stroke, we were told it looked like he
had Non-Hodking's Lymphoma, which was devastating news. Thankfully,
after undergoing lung surgery this past week at Univ. of Pennsylvania
hospital, it was discovered he actually has a disease called
Sarcoidosis; not great, but certainly a relief when compared to cancer.

Anyway, we were scheduled to sail a 10 night cruise on Celebrity Summit
on March 11. Naturally, we had to cancel. We would have been out
thousands of dollars if we hadn't purchased insurance. It was the best
$128 we spent. We've never cruised without it, thinking if something
unforeseen happened to our kids we'd need to cancel. Never thought it
would be my husband. But thank goodness we had it.
