Killing Time in Ft Lauderdale

I've started searching for flights between Oakland, Ca. and Ft.
Lauderdale next November and the best price I could find is on America
West. But the return flight doesn't leave Ft. Lauderdale until 4:50 PM.
If we opt for this flight what should we do while waiting for flight
time?

BTW American Airlines has a better schedule but the fare is about $200
more pp. Another limiting factor is that we don't want to have to go
through a city which might have weather delays on the way down. For
instance, United has routing through Washington, D.C.

Re: Killing Time in Ft Lauderdale

Just got off a cruise in Ft.Lauderdale with an equally long wait
for a flight and found that this is an aiport woefully ill equipped
to handle the crowds on cruise ship disemabarkation days. Not enough
seating, only one restaurant, minimal shopping. You aren't allowed
to go through security until two hours prior to your flight, and once
we got through, I understood why, because the gate areas are also small
and lacking in amenities. So, if I had known then what I know now,
I would have taken a cab to a nice restaurant for Sunday brunch, or
perhaps to a mall, where hopefully I could have stashed my carryon
in a locker and maybe even caught a movie.

I concur with Katherine. FLL is a lovely place to spend a few hours or
longer. Get thee to an outdoor restaurant by the beach and even though
you may have come off a Caribbean cruise this will extend your vacation.
Its beautiful there

Re: Killing Time in Ft Lauderdale

Bob
I know this isn't answering your question but an interesting tidbit
about our last flight to FLL from the Bay Area (Zuiderdam Eastern
Caribbean in Nov 2003)
I actually was able to get that rare internet fare of $128 round trip
in American Airlines via Orbitz. Flight was out of SFO and changed
planes in DFW.
I believe I booked the flight in August right after coming back from a
week at Tahoe-Donner.
We considered staying an extra night on the return but got good times
and it was so quick and easy to get to the airport via taxi.
We stayed at Amerisuites (17 Ave I think) the night before, and the
hotel has a shuttle to the Port for just the drivers tip (it's busy in
the morning, lots of cruisers stay there)

Re: Killing Time in Ft Lauderdale

You can also take a cab to Los Olas Blvd great stores and outside
eatery's.. There is also an area of beach type stores not to far from
Los Olas.

The cruise lines have excursions that can fill this time. A trip to the
Everglades or a boat tour of the Intercoastal Waterway. They will take
you to the airport after the excursion. This is handy since they also
take care of your luggage tranfer.

Take a look at http://sunny.org it may give you some ideas. I usually
stay a few days before or after a cruise because while more laid back
than Miami, Ft. Lauderdale has a lot to offer. In addition to Riverwalk
and Las Olas there's the Art Museum down town. They may even check your
bags while you explore town. In Tampa the Aquarium offers cruisers this
service. If you find a place to stow your bags, you might just want to
take a walk along A1A / Ocean Blvd. One of my favorite beach view
eating places is Cafe Casablanca it's a mix of south Florida cooking and
Spanish influenced cuisine with a little American thrown in.

Re: Killing Time in Ft Lauderdale

Lee,
I've recanted my testimony as I'm not letting the morons/trolls win.
If a taxi ride to the Hard Rock is to expensive then depending on what
time it is you are trying to kill you can get FREE transportation
(after about 4:00 P.M. or so) to and from the airport or anyplace in the
general area from a GREAT Irish bar/restaurant called "The Field". They
have live music, happy hour bar prices, and very good food.
Their number is 954-964-5979, the Bus Hotline for pickup is
954-822-8020.
It's on Griffin Rd. not far from the Hard Rock.
And whomever said earlier that the Hard Rock Resort and Casino is just
for "hardcore gamblers" is obviously another TROLL. It's a World class
resort and spa. Gambling is just one of many things you can do there.
There are now 15 bars/restaurants open from Mexican (with a mechanical
bull) to Steak House to a Hard Rock Cafe to a beautiful outdoor pool
bar/estaurant. Lots of boutique shops also now open.

What can we do with all of our luggage while we're at all the places you
kind folks have suggested. I believe that we can't check it in at the
airport sooner than two hours before flight time.

That is why one of the cruise line excursions may be best. They will
take care of the luggage. Or renting a car would be another good option
as you can store the luggage in the trunk.

Re: Killing Time in Ft Lauderdale

Bob,
I would check with your airline.
I checked in bags four hours in advance at O'hare on Delta this past
January.
But with all this security stuff changing all the time who knows?

Re: Killing Time in Ft Lauderdale

No, you CAN check in luggage earlier in the day. You just
can't get through security at Ft. Lauderdale more than
two hours ahead of flight time. We checked in luggage about
ten for a four p.m. flight last month.

Ditto -- and/or walk up to a restaurant called "Mangoes" to have a bite
if you have time. (Sorry, I forget what street it's on, but it's a
major street, and walking distance from River Walk)

Re: Killing Time in Ft Lauderdale

The terminal in FLL used by Air Canada and Spirt is pathetic. there's
one little convience store place in it, and it was completly out of
drinks...

that would be one airport where Air Canada would benifit by using their
partnerships with united/US Air and using their terminal/gates

This policy must not be rigid. We flew home from the MOAGC cruise in
January and we had no problems going through security. We arrived at
the airport at 11:00 and our flight was at 6:00. Next time I will stay
in a hotel and fly home the next morning, instead of sitting in an
airport all day. Thanks for letting us know what happened to you.

You used "benefit" and "United/US Air" in the same sentence.

OMG I DID!

seriously though, the terminal at FLL used by United/US Air can't be
worse than the one used by Air Canada...
