Freighter Life in Port Said 1954
The Suez Canal is a great passage from Asia to Europe. The great DeLesseps
designed it, and thought he knew all about canals as a result.
So much so he thought he could build the Panama Canal... he couldn't.
Anyway back to the point.
In 1954 I made my first call at Port Said. We anchored and took a tender to
the dock.
The town in those days showed the French influence, as the British showed
theirs in places like Hong Kong and Singapore.
We got into a carriage and asked the driver where the action was. He knew
and took us to a cabaret with an outside dance floor, lined with graceful
palm trees.
Settling in with a few drinks my attention was drawn to a beautiful belly
dancer. I was captivated, as I usually was when women were concerned.
She gyrated over to me and gave me a seductive glance.... I was hooked.
After she finished she sat down at a table and looked at me again.
I got up and sauntered over to her and said hello. She smiled and I sat
down.
We were getting only great when a waiter came over to me.
"Sir, do you see that man standing at the wall looking at you?"
I glanced over and saw the man glowering at me. He was wearing a dagger in
his belt.
The waiter added, "He is the girl's boy friend, I would be careful if I were
you."
I got the point and made my hurried good-byes.
