First Trip To Cancun

I booked a trip on Expedia the other day for me and my girlfriend to Cancun,
Mexico. We are traveling from Syracuse, NY and are arriving at Cancun on
April 4th. The Cost of the Trip for the Two of us was around $1300 for a
3night stay at the "Oasis Beach Resort" located in the Hotel Zone. The $1300
trip includes airfare, lodging, and transfers to and from airport. Was this
a good price?

I was wondering if anyone out there had stayde at this hotel and what they
thought of it. The reviews I read were very mixed. Some loved, some hated
it. I have never been to anyplace quite like this and am very excited about
the experience.

I am planning to have about $1000 USD on me. Is that going to be enough
money for two people to eat, drink, and party with? I might wanna try the
ferry trip to the Isle of Mujeres or however you spell it and I'm looking
for someone to give me their opinion on what is fun to do with such a
limited stay.

Should I get a portion of my money coverted into Pesos, if so how much and
where should I do it?

Any comments, suggestions, anything would be appreciated. Im a 25 year old
guy, she's 22, and we both are up for anything. Let me know.

Joe

Do you have a Visa/Mastercard ATM? Use that instead of carrying a bunch
of money.

Re: First Trip To Cancun

Don't convert anything, they take American currency everywhere and give you
change in pesos. Isla mujeres is a nice side trip. If you want to see the
bullfights, they're on Wed. Don't miss Senior Frogs.

Use credit cards when you can. In restauants, they will convert to US
dollars but the exchange rate is never in your favor.

You can use dollars, but carry small bills with you, because your change
may be in Pesos. This does not happen when you shop in the common
areas, but it does are shopping in out-of-the-way areas.

Enjoy your vacation.

You cant expect good price if you book on Expedia.

Revews can be mixed - its a nice AI resort, but the best is main building
( take a look at the picture of resort)

If you dont want to go anywhere else (f.e. chichen itza, coba, tulum,
cozumel, playa del carmen) - it is enough. If you want to rent a car - you
need a credit card.

And you'll get an exchange rate even worse than if you changed your
money in a US bank before leaving home.

Use VISA/MasterCard for "major" purchases. Get pesos with your ATM
card from the cash machines you'll find everywhere.

While this is generally good advice, and commonly mentioned, I will point out
that many credit cards charge an additional fee (typically 3%) to anything
charged in a foreign currency.

So if you have the cash, the ATM is the best way to go.

My only concern is why you opted for a 3-night stay instead of 5 or 7 to get
a little bit more back for your buck. The biggest part of the expense is
probably the plane fare and so the incremental cost of staying 2 or 4 more
days may have worth it.

As for suggestions on what to see, depending on where you arrive and when
you leave, you could effectively have one and a half days at most. Just not
enough time to do anything but lay on the beach and check out the discos at
night.

Because maybe where they live in the States travel marketing only pushes
Cancun for Mexico. I've only recently seen Playa del Carmen mentioned
in ads by Liberty Travel. To some now, Playa has become too touristy.

Not just the states. Cancun is part of the international tourist
industry. Fly them in, keep them amused, fly them out. Remember to buy
your Mexican hat and decorative tequila bottle in the dutyfree store.
Next planeload please.

With the construction of those vast and hideous hotel blocks on the
shoreline, Playa del C. is also making the transition to being a high
volume tourist processing factory.
