Airport phone calls, Jamaica

Last week I was in Jamaica which I didn't care for, and my return
flight was held up for 17 + hours.
I made two calls 3 minutes each to the States at the airport phone
booth, using my credit card. I just received my credit card statement
each call was just a few cents short of $40.00 USD. I have no recourse
but to pay the blasted bill.
Several words of advice don't make a call using your credit card
because you see you're screwed. I just hope my costly mistake helps
save someone else from making the same one.

Good advice for anyone who is in the Caribbean, especially Jamaica. In
Jamaica for many years Cable and Wireless had a total monopoly on the
market and took advantage wherever they could. Now others are in the
market to rip off any unsuspecting tourists. I HAVE used the credit
phone once, but knew in advance that it was outrageous.

And I love Jamaica.

Yes. Best thing you can do is buy one of the phone-cards at a shop and use
them. Which can be difficult as well, as many of the pay-phones don't
accept these cards, so it's best to use it right at the shop where you buy
it. But on the airport itself you probably don't have any chance to get a
phone-card :-(

Frank

If there ever was a phrase worth heeding while on vacation outside
your own comfort zone or country, it's caveat emptor.

I would *never* feed a credit card into anything at home or
(especially outside the country) without knowing who I was dealing
with and how much is was going to cost.

As for the cost, I wouldn't have been upset with a $40 bill. It's a bit
higher than I might have guessed, but not by much.

I didn't pay the baggage handler in Jamaica who requested a *fee* for
not jumping on my luggage either. I packed so that an elephant could
jump on it. I expect no less from baggage handlers.

There is an office center in the duty free downstairs area. VERY
affordable. Were you in an Air Jamaica fiasco??

I would have looked for an internet cafe and IM'd my peeps that I'd be
delayed. Except in the US, most airport internet cafes are very
reasonable. Some even have Net2Phone connections where you can call for
pennies.
