first time caribbean

Me, my wife and 3-year-old want to go for the first time to the Caribbean.
What's a good island to start? What's the budget one needs at the Caribbean?
(food, drink, ...)
What do we do best regarding accomodation? Will be book some resort or look
for something when we arrive?

Re: first time caribbean

For a young family, I think Isla Mujeres with its calm north beach and
small, close knit community is a great place.

It is off the Yucatan. Just fly into Cancun.

Good choice!

> What's a good island to start?

It depends on what you like to do. If you want losts of family activities,
romance opportunities, mellow atmosphere, sports, all these factors carry
weight in your choice.

What's the budget one needs at the Caribbean?
> (food, drink, ...)

Do you like gourmet or home cooking? Local cuisine or salmon and steaks?
This choice could mean the difference of a dinner ticket ranging from $20 to
$400 per meal.

> What do we do best regarding accomodation? Will be book some resort or
> look for something when we arrive?

Do you want to do all your own cooking, some, or none? Do you want a
concierge and babysitting (hotel) or seclusion and privacy (villa)? Again,
it depends on your needs.

Answer these questions and we'll be in a much better position to help you
construct an ideal vacation for you. That's what we do here along with
discourse about our favorite spots. Planning a vacation is half the fun!

Considering budget and other things we decided to go to the Dominican
Republic for 3 weeks.
We booked at a resort in Samana.
Now besides beach life, what are some points of interest we'll have to see
at the Dominican?

Re: first time caribbean

I would definately recommend trying Jamaica. It has a complete package.
While some islands might have the beach some lack the fun the lush
greenery and the mountains. Jamaica has this and more plus its the
third largest island in the Caribbean. We have all the award winning
resorts and we have hundreds of private villas on the beach available
for rent.

I would highly recommend the Treasure Beach area for your trip. But if
you are looking for an all-inclusive vacation you can check with your
travel agent as the Sandals and Superclubs chains have alot to offer in
this regard.

Take care and do enjoy when you go

I agree.Santo Domingo for one- two days. The best thing in Dominican
republic is luxury, all inclusive hotel. If you still can - take a look at
Iberostar Bavaro( Bavaro beach) - 3 resorts in one place, next to Riu hotel.

What weather can i expect in July? I am reading different stories about it.
Some say a heavy shower - about half an hour - at the end of the day.
Others told me 3 days non-stop rain is normal in July.

And yes, we booked also a 5 star resort. :-))

Clouds don't keep you from getting sunburned. Make it more likely
actually as you don't perceive the heat as much.

Maybe its a bit late to recommend this site, but here it goes:

http://www.debbiesdominicantravel.com/

Its the bible of Dominican Republic resorts reviews. Take your time
on reading the posts. It is a great resource for doing your homework
on DR. Even though your pretty far away at Samana, a trip to Santo
Domingo and staying maybe 2 nights would be a great change of pace (if
you're looking for some nightlife. People there are very friendly and
very tourist-oriented. You could make a good deal with a taxi so he
moves you around for the time you spend at the capital.

If you have any other questions you can email me
