mexico where to go?

Does anyone has suggestions on where to go in Mexico. We are looking
for beautiful turquoise beach, fun places to visit, a fun nightlife,
and people to meet.

Is May a good month to visit Mexico?

Research either coast of Mexico. Travel marketers refer to the Pacific
Coast as the Mexican Riviera. This includes such spots as, Alcopulco,
Puerto Vallarta, Cabo and Huatalco to name a few. Alcopulco and Puerto
Vallarta are probably the most visited and largest on the Pacific Coast.

The east is mainly situated around the Yucatan Peninsula and some out
islands. This includes destinations like Cancun, Isla de los Mujeres,
Puerto Morelos, Playa del Carmen, Playacar, Isla Cozumel, Puerto
Aventuras, Akumal, and Tulum. Cancun is one of the largest and is
comprised of an inland city "El Centro" and "Zona Hotelas" or the hotel
zone. (Imagine Miami Beach but south of the boarder). The Hotel Zone
occupies a rectangular strip of beach. The Caribbean is on one side and
a large lagoon is on the other.

Equally large is the island of Cozumel. (It has it's own international
airport). There is a passenger high speed ferry that runs between
Cozumel and Playa del Carmen. Cancun, Cozumel and Playacar probably
have the largest concentration of All Inclusive Resorts. Isla de los
Mujeres is an island to the north of Cancun. It too is reached by
ferry. It hasn't been as developed as Cancun. As far as I know there
aren't any All Inclusive Resorts there -- just hotels on a smaller scale.

Playa del Carmen while rapidly growing is smaller than Cancun or
Cozumel. It offers the best of both worlds, in that it is smaller
(only one big All Inclusive in town), yet you are a ferry away from
Cozumel and approximately 55 minutes from the Mayan ruins of Tulum.
Most of the other locations along the "Riviera Maya" are smaller towns
to the south of Playa del Carmen or North of Tulum.

Tulum Beach or Playa Tulum has seen the least amount of development.
There are some AI but mostly it's hotels and rental homes, with places
to eat peppered throughout.

For a good overview of Tourism / Vacation opportunities in Mexico view
the official web site for Travel in Mexico
http://www.visitmexico.com/wb2/

That should get you started.

Playa del Carmen or Tulum. Have you considered Ambergris Caye, Belize? It
doesn't have great swimming right right off the beaches, but the water is a
beautiful multitude of blue and turquoise colors. San Pedro is a very fun
place with lots of night life and it's very easy to visit.

It all depends on what you're after and what's important to you. There are
many resort on the left and right coast of Mexico that provide the beautiful
beaches and fun nightlife in both the left and right coast of Mexico. My
only objection to some of these places is that you don't really get a flavor
for the local lifestyle. Take Cancun, for example. You can go there and just
stay in the so-called hotel zone, or Zona Hotelera, and you won't even feel
like you're in Mexico. Everyone speaks English, the almighty dollar is
accepted and you have your usual MickeyDs, KFC and Burger King. Why travel
so far when you might as well be in Miami Beach or Newport Beach. I prefer
less touristy destination, touristy being a relative term. I am partial, for
example, to Huatulco in the state of Oaxaca. Just enough tourism, no more no
less. Or someplace like Ixtapa/Zihuatanejo. I was going to say Acapulco but
it's just like any other big city though you will definitely get to mix with
the locals.

Re: mexico where to go?

Just returned from Playa del Carmen. This was a very nice place to stay.
We were on 5th Avenue at Hotel Maya Bric, very nice central location, very
inexpensive. The food on 5th Avenue was hit or miss for being so pricey,
but the laid back bars and beautiful beaches more than made up for it. And
a quick burrito and cerveza or relaxing massage was very inexpensive one
block back on 10th Avenue. It depends on your objectives. As Brian K
noted, Cancun is like being in Daytona for Spring Break. Beautiful water,
but you won't know you are in Mexico. As well as Playa del Carmen, we
stayed two nights in the inland Yucatan town of Valladolid and stopped in
Chichen Itza, a Mayan village with a spider monkey reserve, and Coba. Very
impressive!

I think I have settled on going to Playa del Carmen for our 25th
anniversary in October and I think we'll stay at the Grand Porto
Resort and Spa based on price and reviews, but still eat out on
the town a lot. Can you tell me if I will find ceveche in the
restaurants there? I love that dish!

Re: mexico where to go?

Grand Porto looks very beautiful and the reviews look generally good.
I saw it from the beach near our hotel at 8th Street. I think you will have
a wonderful time.
You may have to decide how many amenities you will make use of if
you plan to eat out in PdC a lot, since the cost difference between the
European plan and all-inclusive was about 100%. Still, it looks
marvelous, and I have no doubt you will enjoy your honeymoon.
Not being fond of ceviche, I'll refrain from addressing that!

Much better to rent a condo and eat out all the time, the resorts are
not good value. We rented a place with bikes, beach club membership
(chairs etc.) and in a quiet part of town where there is a plethora of
better restaurants. You can get ceviche, but it is usually wiser to make
your own.
