Sightsee Italy

Dear all,
This year it's travel-time again!! Together with my parents I go for the
22th year in row, three weeks to Austria, where I hike through the mountains
and enjoy some outdoor mountain stuff... In the last week a friend of mine,
who happens to be the singer in my band, flies over to Austria (we're from
Holland), and then we go for a four week backpack trip through
Italy....(entire August month)

This is our schedule:
Austria -> via Graz to Slovenia (Bohinsjka) from there on we take the train
to Ljubljana to Gorizia.
We use the Trenitalia railwaypass for 9 traindays, the route is: Gorizia ->
Venice -> Ancona -> Bari or Catanzaro -> Catania (Sicily) -> Naples ->
Rome -> Florence (and Pisa) -> Milan.
We take the nighttrain back from Milan to Holland.

Any suggestions about some great spots? We're two students 21 & 24, like
music, culture and meeting others. We are aware that it is the highseason,
so we try to avoid the crowd as much as possible (which is pretty difficult
in the bigger cities). We plan to stay in cheap hotels or hostels.

The Trenitalia pass is great, and pretty cheap. I am staring at it right
now, dreaming about a great summertrip....................

regards - daan

Re: Sightsee Italy

Hi!
Is there any special reason for you to stop at Ancona? It isn't so
interesting...
I'd suggest to stop at Ravenna (for cultural sight-seeing) and/or
Rimini/Riccione (clubbing scene). The so-called Adriatic Riviera is very
popular (young people from all across Europe, clubs, fun parks, discos, etc.
etc... a bit like on Ibiza) and therefore crowded especially in august
because nearly all Italians take their holiday during this month. But if you
don't like this at all, it might be exactly the reason why you want to stop
in Ancona. ;-) If so, check out the little town Urbino famous for its
ancient university (the students will all be on holiday, I fear) and or San
Marino, the world oldest republic.
These are just some ideas crossing my mind... ;-)
I've lived in Rome for many years and since my father has lived between
Riccione and Ancona for some years (times ago) I spent some holiday there,
too.
So if you want some more suggestions just ask!
Have a nice time in bella Italia!
Ciao,
ellenina
