Travel in Tibet...

Hi!
I'm planning a trip to Mount Kailash and wanted to get away from there (i.e. from
Ali) by the bus from the lonely planet guide of Tibet. Unfortunately I couldn't
contact them bey email (no answer) nor by phone ("number has been disbanded for ... months").

Can anybody tell me what the travel possibilities are for getting from Ali to Lhasa?

Lots of Greetings and thanks!
Volker

Re: Travel in Tibet...

I hope to taking the train from Chengdu to Lhasa when the line
is completed in a couple years. There have been periodic
press reports about the success of this project.
I believe there is currently air and bus and hitchhiking on
trucks (for the bold).

It was 10 years ago when i was in Ali and there were no busses
I saw that would take you out of ali. There are trucks you can
hitch a ride on...but vary few go towards Mt Kailash. Most go North
to Lhasa and West to kashgar. There are no real roads either.
they were all dirt tracks. When i was there we went 5 vehicles abreast
at times.

From Ali to Mt kailash is a good 12 to 18 hours. We took 1.5 days to do it.
Ali to Lhasa going by the Northern route would take 5 to 6 days
assuming you had no vehicle problems.

Re: Travel in Tibet...

the train from Golumd -> Lhasa, already started to lay track last month.

there is no plan to have train from Chengdu, terrain is too rough.

my advise is to visit tibet before the tain comes online...the train might
bring propersity to the people but also destruction to tibetan culture
unavoidable with commerialism and mass tourisim.

kailash to Ali to kashgar only by hitchiking a truck or many truck or rented
4WD. this is one of the most challenging journey through China....good luck
if u miss a ride in mid of no where...5000+m above sea level. lonely planet
info on this part of tibet route (and the chengdu->Lhasa route) is very
outdated and unreliable and as usual, full of prejudices. if u read chinese,
pick up a latest chinese backpacker guide would be more helpful.

i did the Chengdu->Lhasa route last yr, welcome your comment -
