You will need separate cards, as to my knowledge HK and China have
different networks. Haven't bought prepaid cards in HK, but I have in
China. The cards I bought were GSM.

In Shanghai I bought a China Mobile card last November. The card itself,
with no airtime, cost 100 RMB. Then you could charge it with 50 and 100
RMB increments.

I used it mainly to call my wife in Malaysia. A call to Malaysia was 8
RMB/min. Calls within China are around 1 RMB/min, local calls probably
less than that. For incoming international calls from Malaysia I had to
pay RMB 1.90/min. But I was told that there is a card from China Unicom,
where you don't have to pay for incoming calls.

By the way, I bought the card at one booth in an underground station in
Shanghai. No questions asked and I didn't have to show my passport. It
just took me some time and a couple of calls to my (Chinese) wife in
Malaysia, who acted as a translator since the girl selling the card only
spoke Mandarin, to get the card working. The phone I was using was a
Siemens S45i bought in Germany (no need to use a Chinese phone).

ShenZhouXing from China Mobile for China, as it already been mentioned
by Alfred Molon.

Orange from Hutchison for Hong Kong. It cost HK$98 from a vending
machine in a Tsim Sha Tsui M.T.R. station with the charged value of
around HK$98.

Pre-paid SIMs are available everywhere. I got one from China Mobile here in
Beijing for 170 RMB. Avoid buying them in the airport -- they're
over-priced.

DO you read Chinese? I could be wrong but I suspect the face value of
the card you bought is only 100 RMB. We bought a few of them last
summer in China. Thery were all 100 RMB.

I don't read Chinese (at least not very much), but I can read Arabic
numerals just fine. The card came in a sealed package with a price sticker
on it that said 350 Y (I don't know the ASCII code for the Yuan symbol).

My wife does read Chinese, and speaks it as well (she's Chinese). She
called the customer service number for the card and told them how much I
paid for the card. THEY said I was overcharged, and urged us to report it
to authorities at the airport.

Next time, don't buy it at the airport - buy it downtown.

You're not tracking too well. My original post:

" Pre-paid SIMs are available everywhere. I got one from China Mobile here
in Beijing for 170 RMB. Avoid buying them in the airport -- they're
over-priced."

Didn't you write "THEY said I was overcharged, and urged us to report it
to authorities at the airport." ?

Yes I did. Which is why I also wrote, "Avoid buying them in the airport --
they're over-priced."

If there's some point you're making, I'm missing it completely.
