USA Cell Phone in SA for Emergencies?

Will I be able to use my USA cell phone in South Africa to make emergency
calls? What is the emergency number in SA which is the equivalent of 911
in the USA?

I have a Sony Ericsson GSM phone, model T226.
The name of my carrier is Cingular. I have a prepaid account.
The menus in the phone shows that both the SIM and the phone are unlocked.

In the USA, there is a law that all carriers must place calls to the
emergency number, 911, without charge whether or not there is a valid
account or phone number associated with a cell phone. Is there a similar
law in SA? Do I need to get a South African SIM or make any changes
to the phone to reach the SA emergency number?

I appreciate all the help that people in this newsgroup are giving me in
getting ready for my vacation to Africa.

This phone doesn't work on the frequencies in use in south africa.

Jim.

You answered all of my questions with one sentence.

I was going to buy a 240 volt charger but now see no need to do so. I'll
just turn my phone off and hope there is some charge left when I return
to the US.

When you're in SA, you could pick up an appropriate phone with
coverage for a few tens of dollars, handy to have anyway whilst you're
there I'm sure.

Jim.
