Re: Kenya and Tanzania info please?

due to all of the responses I am now quite interested in Kenya ...more
so than Tanzania...but still will try to visit Zanzibar...as I know from
my childhood stories I read back in the early 1940s that there are
pirates there.

Diani beach sounds interesting from what I read...again we are very much
into street life, cafes, and bars, where we can meet local people, not
discos, I am to old for discos. Advice on nice beachside hotels but only
within easy walking distance of outside relaxation. we would rather not
find ourselves in a resort hotel so far from the main road as to need a
taxi to take a walk into the town, "whatever" the town might be.

As=A0to animals, and safaris..I think we would enjoy that, but I am
going to try to avoid that for the present....Im sure in the wild its
much much better...but the thrill seems gone for now, We have been to
and seen quite a few Safari parks so well laid out that driving thru you
may well think your in the bush, many lions not 30 feet from your car,
and fed Giraffes thru the car window. a hundred monkeys jumping on our
car, and Rhinoceros within an apples throw.
and for the real thing which seems the way to go, Im really not up to
camping. For us it would either be real camping with all of the full
discomfort associated with it, or not at all, and Im much to old for
more hardship. I have no desire for full comfort camping.

What I lke to do:
I love sitting in Cafes on Ave Atlantica in Copacabana, in Rio.
I love sitting on Kudamm in Berln
I really like the street and beaches of Phuket and Koh Samui Thailand
I enjoy the street life of Sosua in the Dominican
Republic.

My wife enjoys the warm white beaches.
and together we enjoy these places after dark.

Elliot,

Diani Beach is probably not what you want then. Zanzibar comes
closer, so does Lamu. Or perhaps you would enjoy selected places
in South Africa much more, but I don't know SA, so cannot give
advice.

I'd be careful when selecting places in east Africa. There is a
high risk that you wouldn't find what you're looking for at all.

Yes, this confirms that east Africa may not even be a good
destination for you at all. But with some more discussion you
may be able to find out enough to make a good decision.

You can get a brief overview of Lamu on
http://www.michna.com/kenya2003/ if you scroll down to Thu, 12.
June, and Fri, 13. June – Lamu. And some others here may have
more and better stories and photo collections, perhaps also of
Zanzibar.

Re: Kenya and Tanzania info please?

Unusre about Lamu...seems highly unlikely that we fit in well with
muslim philospohy.

Hans-georg You did a great job. You put a great deal of work into your
review.
We might just go to Kenya and Tanzana and stay a week or so here and
there...stop in and see Zanzibar...and take it as it is..
Diani looks as though the beaches are nice, and the beer should be cold,
so I dont get exactly what I want...Reni my wife loves the beaches so
she will get something from it..

Old men are hard to please anyway.

Elliot,
I think I now know what you want!
Go to: http://www.hemingways.co.ke Hemingways is a four star hotel at
Watamu, a half hour drive from Malindi. It`s not a big hotel but it has
good accommodation and food, is not noisy. The website will show you
all that you need to know. We have stayed there five times and I can
recommend it. You can have excursions from the hotel and you will I
think enjoy it there.
By the way, the whole of the East African coast is Muslim, this will
not affect your holiday though as the people are very welcoming.
You say old men are hard to please, that is probably true but I`m
confident that you will be pleased with Hemingways!

Great idea, Pat!
We stayed at Ocean Sports (next door, cheaper & more basic) but went into
Hemingways a couple of times to change money: it looked very nice and seemed
to have an 'older', more 'genteel', clientele.

Hi Liz,
I don`t think the Sindbad hotel in Malindi would have been
operational when you first went to Kenya, but it was where we always
stayed on our long weekends when Andy worked "up the road" on the Tana
river, and on longer holidays. Whilst staying with friends in Kilifi in,
I think 1995, we decided to go to the Sindbad for lunch,, imagine my
horror when I found the place in a state of decay, and falling apart!
I howled outside! Anyway we were taken to curry lunch at Hemingways,
recently open, as it used to be the Seafarers, and it was wonderful. We
got a brochure and went there every year thereafter. I could do with
going again soon! Of course we fit into the genteel category, but I`m
not saying anything about the "old!" We`ve been to Ocean Sports, which
is a great place and an institution with Kenya residents still. We
haven`t stayed there.
I think Hemingways would suit Elliot and his wife admirably.
