Re: MALI info

Good health and high spirits!
mmm your only going for a week, not alot of time. However I need to know, r
u backpacking it alone or with a guidee?
Is the start city Bamako? R u flying in? when? What do you want to see
exactly? what is your budget?

Timbuktou is accessable but you need a guide of sorts..
Djenne has the world's lgst mud mosque..
Mopti is the fishing village
Dogon country is spectacular.

whats on your agenda?

Hello Emin,

i have been in Mali but it was unfortunately a long time ago (almost
thirteen years). With a friend of mine, we were travelling through
West Africa coming from the North of Cameroon (where i have been
living for two years) and going to Mauritania by 4WD car.

I have wonderful souvenirs of that time.

What have we done ?
We entered in Mali through the boarder with Burkina Faso and spent
three marvellous days in the south of the Dogon country (near a
village called Bankass). We took a guide and spent two or three nights
the chief's home and visiting the cliff during the day. Visiting Dogon
country is one of the best experience i had as a traveller. I
recommend reading some books about these people before going there
(especially from Marcel Griaule the french ethnologist).

Afterwards we went to Djenne. We had especially planned our journey to
be in Djenne by the week day of market. And I especially recommend to
be there while the market stands. Djenne is a gorgeous town and we did
not have the opportunity to visit the splendid Sudanese architecture
style Mosque because it was forbidden to tourists. We also took a
daily guide to walk round the town and take a few pictures.

Afterwards we went also to Segou (with its beautiful colonial style
houses down by the river). And then finally to Bamako that i enjoyed
very much because of its ambiance in the center and the atmosphere
down by the Niger river.

Then we took the train to Senegal.

The things we have not done but we would have enjoyed : visiting the
Bandiagara side of the Dogon country. Going to the mythic Tumbuktu
(which was closed for tourists at that time) and spend time in fishing
village and cruise down by the Niger river.

Best regards
