Palace Station/Downtown

Got a Tower Room for 3 nights and looking forward to playing some poker. I
checked out Cheap-o's review and just wanted to get a couple opinions from
the ng. I've only been to the Palace Station once but it was a quick hit
and run....some bingo and blackjack (amazing how easy it is to get comped
there). Cheap-o said the poker room was small, very smoky, and a lot of
locals play there so I shouldn't look for any handouts. Guess my question
is how small and how smoky? I'm one of those who doesn't like smoke, but if
I'm in a bar or a poker room, I'd almost feel uncomfortable without a little
haze in the air, so I'm not anal about it. I've read conflicting reports on
the food at the Palace Station. Any places you'd recommend? (Buffet?
Broiler?) Also, is the sportsbook as crappy as Cheap-o makes it seem?

I'll be spending a day downtown for the first time other than the few
minutes I spent there to see the FSE last year. Is there anything I MUST do
while I'm down there? Andrew as well as a couple others here constantly
tout MSS for their buffet as well as some bar that carries FP JOB, so I'll
be sure to check that out. I don't foresee myself trying a fried twinkie or
fried oreo, but ya never know. Is Mermaids worth a look around? I'm a
total downtown virgin, so any pointers in the right direction would be much
appreciated. Any vice is allowed save strip clubs and escorts.

Thanks in advance,
Chris

Re: Palace Station/Downtown

While you're downtown, get a .99 shrimp cocktail at Golden Gate and if you
like beer...go to the 38 beer bar at Golden Nugget and do some tasting.
Follow that up with a trip to Main Street Station and sample their brew pub
selections. You won't be disappointed. Do that at the 777 brew pub or at
the main bar which is adjacent to their very good buffet. Finally, do the
casino tour. Walk downtown and hit most of the places, if only for a few
minutes at each one because I guarantee you'll see "characters" at each that
you won't find on the strip. Make sure you make it into the Plaza and El
Cortez for a touch of local color.
Have fun!

Re: Palace Station/Downtown

Heck, while downtown at 10, 11 and midnight on the stroke of the hour, just
look UP.

In between all that, have a fried twinkee at Mermaids, a Shrimp Cocktail at
Golden Gate, a beer at Main Street Station, the Orential Soup at the Cal,
and peek at the Girls of Glitter Gulch. When you get the bill for the first
round of drinks there, that should get all the junk food to come up and soon
you are hungry again.

Trust me, you will not forget the FSE!

Re: Palace Station/Downtown

I'd stay at the Palace Station. It's nice and the buffet prices are great.
Full dinner last night for $6.99 per is great!~ No card needed to get the
deal, just go in and get it.

Definitely, the palace Station would be my choice.

Re: Palace Station/Downtown

I agree, the Fremont Street Experience (FSE) is not to be missed. The music
is great and the way that everything is presented is fantastic! Shows start
in the evening, are every hour on the hour and the last one is at midnight.
It is cool to look at the crowds while the show is going on and see people
standing there with their families, everyone looking us with their mouths
agaw. It's a great time.

Re: Palace Station/Downtown

A quick note on Palace Station poker. It is now a non smoking room so the
cigarette smoke will be just outside in the in the sports book. I think
there are 6 or 7 tables and it is pretty friendly. Plently of locals but
many guests as well. Biggest game you are likely to find is 4-8, and it
tends to be kinda tight. Sports book is right next door and it isn't that
bad, plenty of seating and easy view of TV's.

Have fun

Re: Palace Station/Downtown

As they travel South-East <look on a map> on Fremont I personally never go
past the end of the awning that is the Fremont Street Experience at night,
and probably would not in the day.. There are people down there that'll
take your wallet on ..."East Fremont".

Just so that some will get a mental image of this... Fremont starts at the
Plaza Hotel, which is WAY north of Charleston. As it travels eastward it
also moves "south" on a map to end Charleston, bisecting the angle. That
end forms a complicated intersection of Charleston, Fremont, and the start
of Boulder Highway. The correct name is NOT south Fremont as I incorrectly
stated, but East Fremont. I just incorrectly called it South because it
moves in that direction, and my mental image at the time was looking from
the AM/PM on Eastern and Charleston which is south of the Downtown Hotels.
~~Fastidious points... Anyone can go to Google and map it out if they
are not familiar with it.
I stand corrected on my use of the word.

Fremont Street Experience? Nah, not a good time.

Ditto the Palace Station. It's OK for commoners, I suppose. But not
for people who have the money do enjoy better lodging and atmosphere.

Thanks for the heads up on the poker room. I guess Cheap-o needs to update

Re: Palace Station/Downtown

Thanks to everyone for all the input. Looks like my downtown day will go
something like this:

-Gonna see Collin Foster (magician), Larry Jones (impersonator), and
whatever comedian is at the Comedy Zone (all 3 at the Plaza)
-Pig out at MSS Buffet but not too much so that the micros at the brewpub go
down ok.
-Jury's still out on the fried sweets at Mermaids but we'll stop in there
and at least get a big ass liquor drink. (by we, I mean the wife and I)
-I feel obligated to see the poker room at Binion's as well as the fat
nugget at the GN, so we'll do that.
-Midnight snack at the Golden Gate in the form of a .99 cent shrimp cocktail
and then top the night off with Krispy Kreme at Fitzgerald's while hopefully
hanging out on the balcony. (if they let me)
-Regurgitation on a massive scale...hopefully after the taxi has gotten us
back to Palace Station.

I somehow have all this fit in one day, which means I won't have much time
to gamble. But I will have an hour to kill between shows at the Plaza. Any
good slots or VP there or should I just hit the tables? Also, will downtown
still be busy around 1 or 2 on a Monday night?

The Plaza has a really good 2-deck blackjack game, many tables, often $5
limits, no more than $10.

Have a good time, Chris. My brother and his family are coming in this
weekend and also doing the downtown thing as well. I hear lots of good
things about Larry Jones but have not seen him yet. Please post a report.

Not to cause a commotion, but why don't they stay at your house?

Must sees downtown are:
FSE light show from the second floor balcony at Fitzgerald's.
If you're with your wife/significant other, Hugo's Cellar at the Four
Queens. Ladies all get a rose, service is superb, reasonable prices
for the quality.
Hell Cortez, simply for the atmosphere and good games, although I'd
avoid that area at night.
Shrimp cocktail and live piano at Golden Gate. Do note that the only
difference between the 99 cent cocktail and the $2.95 cocktail is the
size of the shrimp, the glass they come in is exactly the same.

Mermaids may be worth a try if you want to get a deep fried Twinkie or
Oreo. Otherwise, get their free beads, walk in one door and out the
other. Mermaids (and it's sister, La Bayou across the street) have the
second tightest slots in Las Vegas, after the airport, and no tables.
You already ruled out a strip club, which is a good thing. Seeing the
girls outside of The Golden Goose, I'd only pay them to keep their
clothes on.

Basically, downtown is about gambling. The strip is about shows, fake
volcanoes and pyramids, etc. Which you choose depends on your
preferences. If you don't like one downtown casino, it's a short walk
to another one. The only "must" in either place is to have fun. For
more details, you've already found Cheapovegas, that's your best source.

They probably don't want to commute from Los Angeles to the LV strip
every morning.

Besides, if BM was your brother, how much time would you really want
to spend with him?
