Unhappy Job Story: Flight Attendant War Stories....Stewardess

You are so correct. People's attitudes do change at 30 thousand feet...just look at your own.

Have you ever thought that people may actually be sensing your negativity and are actually just throwing your own bad thoughts back at you?

While I understand how rude pax can be and that you do not deserve to be called a bitch by anyone, I also do not think any fellow human being deserves to be called "trailer trash."

Some of the necessary characteristics of F/As are patience, caring, and a positive attitude during stressful situations.

During an emergency, I would feel sorry for anyone in your charge that you deem to be a lesser human than yourself. I can't imagine that you would go out of your way to save the life of that person you think of as "trailer trash" sitting in first class.

Maybe you should consider a change in occupation.

By reffering to yourself as Miss Cellephane (sic) it looks to me like you are mad because pax don't pay enough attention to you. Sorry about your luck. You are not there to be a model or to have people tell you how pretty you are. You are there for their safety. Depending on the size of the plane, let's say there are an average of 150 people on each of your flights. There are always going to be times when someone has an accident such as wetting themselves or they have a severe case of diarhea. Sorry to be so graphic, but life happens. Maybe you need to find a different career where people will pay more attention to you and you don't have to subject yourself to the "trailer trash" as you so elequently refer to them.

I'm seriously thinking about switching from a nurse to a flight attendant. Your wages are not capped like in nursing so eventually I would be making more money. And your diarrhea story is nothing to what I'm used to...hell I've even had a whole urinal bottle spilled all over me along with other bodily wastes.

Anything to get away from bitchy nurses!

I was a flight attendant and it's a demeaning nasty job. People are white trash with no class.

I had a woman get her period, and sit on a pillow, then pulls me over to tell me she's bleeding through the seat. I had a lady want me to hold her barf bag while she vomited, asian people pissing on the floor of the lavs. (and for those of you to dare say I'm culturally intolerant, I'm asian). Still it's fucking NASTY! I've had people piss in blankets and when you go to fold them up you end up getting their RANK all over yourself.

Fortunately I am no longer a flight attendant, but for all of you ripping on the lady who first posted, FUCK YOU. You have no idea what it's like to deal with whiny-assed-trailor trash on a daily basis - be told you need to do 6 San Fran turnovers and NOT be paid until the plan takes off - no delay pay. Do Las Vegas -NY turns in one day. It's grueling and I felt like an old lady at the end of every damn shift.

Sick of being a flight attendant

Hi,

First of all, people who are not or have never been a flight attendant cannot judge the lady who posted this.

I believe that unless you have actually done a flying job, you have no right to comment on the working conditions of a profession you do not know.

But unlike her or the other F/a who replied to her, my main problem is actually with the crew itself. I can deal with difficult passengers, if they are rude to me i just ignore them.

However, it s hard to be stuck on a plane for a whole day ( 4 legs a day) with bitchy F/A.

i am currently a f/a in the uk and apprently, the working conditions are not better in the US. We get mininum rest. 4 or 5 legs a day and we get treated like 3 years old children by managers.

The job is not rewarding, and financially it s a job. I usually work between 10 and 12 hours a day , 6 days on.

I want a career change so i am starting nursing school in september to become a psychiatric nurse.

Lightbulb No regrets joining yet no regrets quitting

I am a stewardess too, flying for almost 5 years in one of the asia country and are looking foward to change my job. U r rite that there are many pax that pisses us off as well as some crw attitude but I would say with all this rubbish maybe we are learning some kind of suvivor skill by controlling our temper.

There's good and bad about this job but financially we are pretty well paid. Imagine if u were to work on ground, u r paid much lesser yet still get the "F" word throw on u either by ur boss or customer. Its the same after all.

I agreed, its somehow tired being up the skies most time and feel suffocating but once the flight is over .... our grudges should be over by talking it out with someone like ourself.. our batchmate or close friend in the airlines too...

So if u r so fuking tired then call it a quit but hopefully no regret after that. Must be prepared with the outside war. I sincerely wish those who have decided to leave good luck and all the best (i am wishing to myself too anyway) because I know I will miss it someday, I do gain much more than loosing much so No Regret Joining No Regret Leaving!

We have done marvelous job afterall... we are well trained in terms of EQ after all rite ...

Hi, all.

"First of all, people who are not or have never been a flight attendant cannot judge the lady who posted this.

Say what! I can't believe I read that! Talk about going from the frying pan into the fire. If you have read about getting people's bodily fluids all over them working at 30K feet, well, you will get it all day/night on the ground and be told to be grateful for it. You will be constantly told that you are an expense and that there are plenty of other nurses ready and willing to take your place. After you have been a nurse for a few years in one clinic/hospital, etc. you are considered a liability they don't want. Better to make your life miserable so they can get rid of you and hire a new grad at half the pay.
Do yourself a favor, don't go into psyche or nursing at all. I did psyche for 8 years. It is legalized extortion. The md's, and staff are crazier than the patients. They will go out and dig up criminals and give them a dx to get 1000k per day out of insurance or medicaid.
Stay in the air, or get out, but DON'T GO INTO NURSING!!! Check out the Nursing sucks forum for a real eye opener. Been a nurse for 20 years in many areas. It sucks big time. Never will change. Not in my life time anyway.

You are absolutely right and that is why I quit my job as a flight attendant.

Well said and very accurate.

I too am a flight attendant, and all the posts from the above flight attendants are actually correct.

You do not get treated with respect. You are generally ignored by the majority of passengers boarding the plane. Then they suddenly acknowledge you when they "need" something.

I found this forum because I'm ready to hang up my wings. Actually I decided last night on my way home to quit as soon as profit sharing checks are distributed in Spring 2006.

For all those that think we do nothing, that's your opinion.

And for all my fellow flights attendants, KUDOS to you.

I am too a flight attendant, and it can be far from glamorous! The thing that bugs me the most is when pax blame me for things that are completely out of control, like the weather. Don't they realize that by being delayed and missing important events, that we sometimes are too!

And a shout out to all parents - Buckle Up You Child! Don't ask me to do it. Would you put your 3 year old in a van without a car seat? Think about it!

I'm just getting ready to retire after thirty years as a psychiatric nurse. To the f/a who wants to enter my field............be prepared. It's
no better than what you're bitching about. Possibly worse. We chose jobs that put us in contact with others. If you don't like it, do something that will allow you to work in a less populous field. Appears to me that the writer of this article and most of the respondants lack any feelings for others and when you have that attitude others pick up on it and respond to you in kind. It's a big world with lots of things to do. Stop making yourselves and others miserable.

The attitude of "if you don't like it, leave it" is what allows people to treat those who serve them like trash. Anything other than a chemical imbalance is no excuse. Don't ruin my day.

People need to be happy in their jobs! If you are not happy it will reflect in your performance. Remember every job has its ups and downs you just have to weigh the differences. Remember there are many people who would love to experience the role as a Flight Attendant.

Smile

I do love my job; in fact I have fun everyday!

As for being glorified waitresses, let me ask you this:

Do you ever grab your waitress when she approaches the table?

Do you shove garbage in her face?

Do you completely ignore her when she's talking to you?

Do you call the restaurant to yell at a waitress when the roads are covered in snow and you can't drive there?

Do you hide in restaurant bathrooms for a smoke?

If your plane ticket cost 200$, do you tip the flight attendant 15%?

I really hope you don't do these things...except the tipping, that would be cool

So the next time a flight attendant needs to puts out a fire, evacuate a plane, or treat injuries, you better hope she doesn't think she's just a "glorified waitress". 'Cause honey, there ain't no glory in it!

So you are leaving one bad profession to get into one that is even worse. I am a nurse, you should read the thousands of posts under nursing, that ones labelled I hate nursing and nursing sucks and such. If you being a flight attendant is bad you will be begging to go back before long once you are a nurse!!

I spent 8 years as a F/A in the late 80's into the mid 90's. I left to pursue a career in Internet Marketing and sales.

I can tell you this much: We F/A's (actually most airline employees) refer to jobs outside the industry as "real jobs" well, let me tell you a little about the "real world".

If misery loves company, then the corporate arena is a loving place. The key here is this: you are working with the same people day in, day out. It's harder to get around personality clashes as you can't simply "bid a new schedule" each month to avoid them. Overtime is generally mandatory and it's not paid for. Your computer usage, break times etc, are all measured.

You take the same crowded route to work each day, walk into the same hell hole, and when you leave the office at the end of the day, you go right back to the same commuter misery you arrived in that morning. Corporate life is repitious, boring and there are a lot of mean spirited people.

After 8 years of the corporate circus, I gave it up and went back to an airline as a Flight Attendant.

New cities and faces to see, trip trades, lots of days off....I can handle the occasional unruly PAX.

I'm a Flight Attendant, and I'm proud of what I do, and I look forward to the adventure of going to work.

Maybe those who are no longer able to handle the perils of in-flight work, should consider other careers. As someone said earlier there's nothing more miserable than a 4 day trip with bitchy, whiny crewmembers.

"You do not get treated with respect. You are generally ignored by the majority of passengers boarding the plane. Then they suddenly acknowledge you when they "need" something."

Wow, this thread is really facinating. I have no doubt that there are negative aspects to being a flight attendant, as there are for all jobs, by the way. And I admit that some of those described by the posters sound very unpleasant. The above quote, however, speaks volumes about the poster. As an airline passenger, I generally do not bother the airline staff (that is what you are) unless I need something. You are there for my safety and comfort. If you don't like it, quit. There is no excuse for passengers being rude but I have seen innumerable instances of bitchy flight attendants taking their personal dissatisfaction out on innocent passengers. It is not our fault you have to work for a living.

That first flight attendant got it right....YES THERE IS TRAILER TRASH OUT THERE AND THEN SOME. We get the mother who has the gall to say "Do you have food because my children are starving they havent eaten all day (mind you its 3pm) or the mother that asks for milk because she didnt bring any for her 6 month old (its a 5 hour flight to cali) HELLOOOOO Now lets talk about these precious Angels......a 4 year old telling you "about time you got here with my soda "(did i mention its 6am?) or the 10 year old telling you "my snacks fell on the floor pick them up" or that 9 year old that found the call button and rings you 8 times to get a drink, snack, another drink, another snack and so on. Yup I love them all. Now lets talk about the adults.........There you are standing with your big smile greeting everyone "hello..welcome aboard" and here comes mrs charm "i want a blanket and a pillow now" or "gimme a bottle of water i have to take my pills, i was supposed to take them 30 minutes ago" (bottle costs $2 in the terminal) Then our day really begins when people get that middle seat. "oh no, i cant sit in the middle seat, i get sick you get me an aisle RIGHT NOW!!! DO YOU HEAR ME?? im not sitting in the middle" and the spiffy looking gentleman that starts throwing his bag around because he didnt get the emergency exit row "i booked it 3 months ago THREE MONTHS AGO why didnt i get it, this is fucking ridiculous i will never fly your airline again you are a bunch of fucking morons" I can go on and on but lets go to another subject. Serving drinks and snacks. My airline we take their orders and give them pretty much what they want and THEY KNOW THIS!!! So here is how one order goes, "yes can i get a decaf with half and half and 2 sweet and lows, a diet coke no ice, bottle of water oh make that two and i see you have soup, let me get one also" snacks? "yes umm 2 chocolate chips, umm some chips, do you have nuts? yes? oh then let me get one oh wait and an animal cracker..i didnt have dinner" i noticed. Her ticket cost $79 for a 2:30 flight to Florida, she has to get her moneys worth..but wait shes calling me back "my grandkids love those chips can i get 4 more bags" Lets move on...Crying children and the effects it has on the people around them. I had this 1 year old that was not having it, he was crying and crying and people were getting annoyed. A passenger sitting 2 rows behind on the opposite side calls me and tells me "WHY DONT YOU DO SOMETHING ABOUT THAT? ITS FUCKING ANNOYING" i calmly ask her what would she like me to do about it "PUT A FUCKING PILLOW OVER HIS HEAD AND SHUT HIM THE FUCK UP" as God is my witness that was the reply word by word. Now.....can you say Trailer Trash?? Or the one lady that said you are going to have to compensate me because i have a huge headache from that baby crying, i said of course i would compensate her, i leave and return 5 minutes later, hand her a bottle of water with some aspirin, she asks "what the hell is this" i reply "your compensation". Its sad to say but yes people have forgotten their manners. I dont ask for respect because im a flight attendant and need to be "glorified" but because im a human being and I give respect. I have been called every name in the book not because i gave them bad service, but because there was a snow storm and we couldnt leave on time, or because we serve no food, or because we have 20 other planes in front of us and it will take 30 minutes to take off, because we have to divert becasuse someone is having a heart attack...there is a screaming baby on board......we ran out of beer.....we dont have coffeemate on board......there are no crayons.....they didnt get the seat they wanted......we dont have the drink they want....the list goes on and on. So im sorry to report to you, there is trailer trash and then some on board. I still love my job though, where else can you stand there while someone is having a FUCKED UP day and give them the biggest smile you can. That pisses them off more. Happy flying everyone.
