Cubans Refute US Assessment of Cuban Military Maneuvers
Havana, Dec 29 (Prensa Latina) Cuban panelists on local prime TV have
refuted any intention other than upgrading the country's defense
capabilities behind the latest war games staged in the Island.
TV anchorman Reinaldo Taladrid recalled that State Department Spokesman
Richard Boucher had deemed Cuba's recent Bastion 2004 military drills
as one among the many things the Cuban government does "to distract the
people from its daily hardships."
According to top US official, Washington is not threatening Cuba, on the
contrary, it has championed its peaceful transition to democracy.
"We do live with plentiy of difficulties," admitted Taladrid, but they
are a consequence of the threats and aggressions launched by the largest
and strongest military power in History."
In talking to the press and asked whether the US contemplates a military
attack on Cuba, Boucher noted: "We have always said we support peaceful
change in Cuba. I will confine myself to this." This Taladrid stressed,
is more worrying than saying things openly.
According to Republican Congressman in Florida Mel Martinez, "we must
live as neighbors," but Taladrid recalled martinnez has always been in
cahoots with Miami-based Cuban-American "mafia", who continue to predict
and promote "the prompt fall of Fidel Castro's regime."
The journalist went on to mention US accusations that could eventually
justify the US aggression on the Island, such as possession of anthrax
and weapons of mass destructions.
Bastion military drills, Taladrid countered, has been the best reply to
their lies, and a convincing demonstration of the high cost the US would
have to pay if they attempt any atatck on Cuba.
The war games involved over four million Cuban, both military and
civilians, who participated in the National Defense Days.
Rogelio Polanco, chief editor Juventud Rebelde daily, also attending the
program, indicated that wordl media had reflected the drills, referring
to the need for Cuba to strengthen its defense system in the face of
growing US threats and aggressions.
Other media reminded the US that it should know better before embarking
on a military aggression on Cuba, so that it avoids the mistakes
committed in Vietnam and is now committing in Iraq.
