The West of Cayo Coco Proposed as Protected Area
Ciego de Avila, Dec 30 (AIN)-Scientific monitoring and integrated coastal
management in the ecological reserve west of Cayo Coco have created a high
level of preservation of the ecosystem of northern Cuba.
Supported by the UN Development Fund, the area located in the central
province of Ciego de Avila, is part of the biodiversity conservation project
of the Sabana Camaguey archipelago.
Among the activities carried out during the last four years in the area is
research into the land and marine flora and fauna as well as the soil, water
and beaches.
Other outstanding work is the care and vigilance of the forest rangers,
re-forestation, environmental education and improvement in the knowledge of
ecological reserves.
The area west of Cayo Coco is among those proposed as protected areas due to
its regional significance, such as mangroves, coral reefs and marine life.
The area includes a rich and varied fauna of over 170 species and the Loma
del Puerto dunes, measuring between 10 to 14 meters, the second highest in
the country.
