Cuban Defense Training Exercise Highly Effective
Havana, Dec 30 (AIN) The Bastion 2004 strategic defense exercises fired a
clear message to the United States, declared Gen. Leonardo Andollo Valez on
Wednesday evenings nationally and internationally broadcast "The Round
Table" program.
The deputy Chief of Staff of the Revolutionary Armed Forces gave a detailed
evaluation of the results, experiences and scope of Bastion 2004, which took
place all along the Cuban archipelago from December 13-19.
Gen. Andollo underscored that the military drills demonstrated the validity
of the defensive concepts of the nation in operational, tactical and
strategic aspects, while employing the minimum use of resources.
He added that it was a clear demonstration of the capacity, readiness and
combat organization capabilities of the Cuban people to face an enemy
military aggression. The drills also tested the cohesiveness and
preparedness of cadres and officials at all levels of the Communist Party,
Government, Revolutionary Armed Forces, the Ministry of the Interior, and
the nation's mass organizations.
Bastion 2004 involved all sectors of Cuban society. A total of 121,000
troops and 2,500 command posts participated in the first two stages and more
than four million people took part in the two National Defense Days that
wound up the exercises, said the general.
During the program, broadcast from the headquarters of the Revolutionary
Armed Forces Ministry in Havana, Gen. Andollo insisted in the complexity and
accuracy of the actions that took place during the training exercises, as
new organizational and operational methods for command and control systems
were implemented.
For the first time, the high ranking military officer stated, monitoring of
provincial, municipal and local non-combat defense activities were
implemented, and a team of 1,400 experts kept tabs on and evaluated the
actions.
He said the experience was particularly centered on the Isle of Youth and
the City of Havana, because the capital city is a territory of particular
importance for the nations defense.
Besides Gen. Andollo, also participating on The Round Table were Gen. Alvaro
Lopez Miera, deputy minister and Chief of Staff of the Revolutionary Armed
Forces, Gen. Carlos Fernandez Gondin, deputy minister of the interior, other
high-ranking military officers and Pedro Saez Montejo, the first secretary
of the Communist Party for the City of Havana.
