Tuberculosis Claims 119 Lives in Angolan Province in Ten Months
Luanda, Dec 29 (Prensa Latina) At least 119 people have died of tuberculosis
in the last ten months in the Angolan province of Huambo, reported Elias
Finde, director of the central hospital.
The victims were also suffering from other diseases such as AIDS and
diarrhea, Finde told the press, adding that 1,684 new cases of tuberculosis
were reported over this period - 3 percent more than the same period
last year.
The Angolan government admitted over 5,000 people die each year from
this disease, which is affecting 35,000 citizens.
Angolan Health Ministry sources indicated the high poverty level, lack of
adequate food, and a deficient health care system are the main causes behind
such a dire situation.
