Vietnamese PM Calls to Intensify Measures against Bird Flu

Hanoi, Dec 29 (Prensa Latina) Vietnamese Prime Minister Phan Van Khai has
urged provinces and local agencies to tighten control on avian flu ahead of
a possible spread during Tet (Lunar New Year).

Khai said the virus has recurred in some Cuu Long (Mekong) Delta's
provinces earlier this month, representing a serious risk. The fresh avian
flu outbreak has been attributed to colder weather and increased poultry
transport before Tet.

In a recently signed directive, the Prime Minister ordered provincial and
municipal People4s Committees to strictly ban the transportation of sick
poultry out of the affected zones, and punish violators under the veterinary
ordinance.

They must also provide people fighting the epidemic with sufficient
protective clothing and devices to prevent the deadly virus from being
transmitted to humans.

The Prime Minister also urged the ministries and border guard forces as
well as border provinces to rigorously inspect the transportation of poultry
and poultry products into the country.

Meanwhile the World Health Organisation continued warning regional
countries about the possibility of recurrence and transmission to humans.
