geoscience salaries start at $67K

A Denver newspaper reports that college seniors in the applied
geosciences are being offered salaries averaging $67,000 plus
significant bonuses due to the petroleum boom.

That may be. When I was growing up in the 1960s and early 1970s, a job
in the oil industry meant that one could eat well and live comfortably
for as long as one wanted. One reason it attracted many of my undergrad
classmates was the pay.

Since the early 1980s, however, it's been a boom-and-bust business,
subject to the same economic forces like many other industries.
