| William Sound, and any other advice you'd like to share.
What we liked best, which may or may not work for you:
1. A boat tour from Whittier into Prince William Sound. Taking
the train from Portage was simple. More information on Whittier
and tour operators, can be found at...

2. A raft trip inside Wrangell-St.Elias NP that starts in McCarthy is
about as remote as you can get. Getting to McCarthy requires a
plane ride from Glennallen or a 4-wheel vehicle. But there's a direct
highway from Anchorage to Glennallen. Here's Frommer's quote
on rafting in Wrangell-St.Elias:
The Kennicott River, starting at the glacier of the same name, boils
with Class III rapids for some 40 minutes, starting right from the
footbridge at the end of the McCarthy Road. ...[M]ost trips include
a plane ride at least one-way, and that makes white-waterrafting day
trips here more expensive than outings near Anchorage or Valdez.
At times, hour-long, drive-back floats have been available on a
walk-in basis at the footbridge, but most trips punch deeper into the
backcountry. A float from the footbridge through the Nizina Canyon
takes all day, with lunch and bush plane flightseeing trip back, which
could include a glacier fly-over. St. Elias Alpine Guides charges $235
.... This is Alaska on its largest and most grandiose scale...
