TSUNAMI SCARE: Tourists fleeing during peak holiday season

Tsunami scare: Tourists fleeing Goa during peak holiday season

By Rupesh Samant, in Panaji

Monday, December 27, 2004

While tourist season is at its peak, Goa has a reason to
worry with the Giant Tsunami tidal wave devastation. The
Goan sea too got rough after Christmas night and has
remained unprecedented till date. This has resulted in
tourists, especially foreigh tourists, leaving the state
due to fear.

The worst affected tourist centre was Palolem beach in
South Goa where nearly dozen of tourists remained
stranded in beach shack. After a wait for almost two
hours they were rescued by locals using canoes.

Goa at present is flooded with the domestic and foreign
tourists alike, to celebrate the new year. For all the
beaches are prime attractions and with the tidal wave
fear gripping all the coastal states, the tourists are
preferring to leave the state. The impact, though not
felt on a large scale, is worrying the tourism industry.
"My shack was completely indundated in water. Hardly a
month back we had set up shacks. Tourists are afraid and
will not turn up here for this season," rued Fransisco
Barros, a shack owner from Palolem beach.

The shack owners largely are dependent on the foreign
tourists for their earnings. Palolem is one amongst the
beach which was getting foreign tourist recognition these
years.
