Help finding cheap stopover flights?

Hi all

I'm looking at travelling from the UK to Los Angeles sometime in the middle
of May 2005 (exact dates to be confirmed, but I want to be actually IN LA on
the 17th at the latest, and return home the 21st at the earliest.

I was hoping to meet some american friends while I was over there, but they
live in Virginia which is kinda the other side of the country Someone
suggested I try to book a flight from the UK to LA that makes a stopover in
Virginia, as this would be a lot cheaper than an interstate flight.

There's two of us going, and we're students so we're on a VERY tight budget.
We're trying to balance the dates we want to be in LA with getting the
cheapest flights.

We've found accomodation for around £30 a night, so if it's cheaper to
travel a couple of days earlier or return a couple of days later then we
could do that.

Travel bookings confuse the heck out of me though because of hidden costs,
strange jumps in price on certain days, etc. I can't find anywhere that
offers a flight OUT from the UK (either Newcastle or Heathrow) to Virginia,
then LA same day / next morning at the latest, then back from LA to the UK.

Sorry if this sounds dim, but can anyone offer any advice / point me to a
good web site for this kind of thing, and highlight any pitfalls?

Thanks in advance.

I am reluctant to try a link from a domain name that has been spammed across
so many newsgroups for various things.

Does anyone have any other advice please?

Re: Help finding cheap stopover flights?

Well, since the distance from one end of Virginia to the other is about
the same as the distance from Edinburgh to Calais, it would be helpful
to know exactly where in Virginia your friends are and if they have a
car available.

If they are within a reasonable distance of Washington DC, you should be
able to find flights through either Dulles (IAD) or Baltimore (BWI) that
would probably allow a free or lowcost stopover. If they are in
southern Virginia, I don't know of any "off the shelf" ways to do this,
but a good UK travel agent might.

Unfortunately at the moment all I know is Virginia, but I'll ask them to
clarify next time I speak to them. We've not really discussed geography
since the possibility of this trip is quite a suprise.

I've tried Travelocity and Lastminute plus a couple of other places and none
of them seem to actually have a proper option for stopovers, or do you have
to use a bricks and mortar travel agent for these things?

Again, if this sounds silly then sorry, but I've never actually had to book
travel outside of very short trips in europe through my employer, where I
didn't have to wade through options.

Thanks.

Re: Help finding cheap stopover flights?

I know there are people at rec.travel.air who would have more
information for you than I do. Many Brits and Europeans post there but
without knowing where in Virginia you're going you won't get a lot of
good information, at least about your trip. Those folks tend to get
carried away politically, philosophically, and prove the simile about
opinions and body parts on a daily basis.

Grin, thanks for the advice.

I'll chase this guy down in the new year (He's a teacher and only gets
online during term time). Then take a peek in there!

Thanks again.
