"Discounted" airfares - how to find?

I get so tired of going to websites after seing great looking prices
advertised in their newspaper ads only to find you have to input an exact
date, flight info, and sometimes even time to find out a price which is
often 5 times the advertised price. If ABC Travel Company is advertising
Toronto to Cancun for $149 return airfare, wouldn't it be logical to expect
the date and restrictions to appear on their website? I have yet to find a
website (other than the airlines themselves) that shows real discounted
fares. Is there one? I'm in Canada going somewhere warm. Not too picky.

Have you tried this one
http://www.friends-in-kiev.com/airline-tickets.shtml
?
Please tell me if you experience any inconvenience with this search engine
so I could contact my partner to tell him what has to be improved?
Apreciate your advice!

Well, apart from the ads, it doesn't let you search for a low fare
without a date. I plan my vacations around when I can get cheap
tickets, so having to plug in random dates to try and find combinations
that give good prices is very anoying.

I agree with the above. Why can't the searcher put in a range of dates? Most trips
that I take do not have a specific date to go and return.

For instance, I would like to enter "During June" for the departure flight and " +/-
sixty days later" for the return flight. That shouldn't be too hard to program, but I
have yet to find a ticket program that does this. The actual search might take a bit
of time to complete itself, but so what?

Re: "Discounted" airfares - how to find?

First thing your friend should do is make the site work in other browsers
beside Internet Explorer. Then - make it actually work. The airfare that
was returned was 16 times higher than the locally discounted airfare!
Absolutely great!

Couldn't agree with you more.
Trim your posts so top posting works! If you have a short reply, its so
much easier to see it on the top so the reader doesn't have to scroll all
the way to the bottom. If its a long reply than bottom posting will have to
suffice. And trim your posts!

Travelocity has the option, which is nice, but comparing several sites
is the only way to get a good price.

One reason we don't trim posts

Re: "Discounted" airfares - how to find?

At travelocity you can put in for fares based on no specific date. This gives
you low fares, but maybe not available on dates you could go. Still...
I have found low fares available there over many days/months and then other
times only a couple days. You take your chances.
You have to know what a GOOD fare is to be able to know when it comes up. So
you have to keep an eye on things on a regular basis.
Also you could set up a farewatcher for up to 5 choices. Put in your
parameters. That is the way I got RT to Costa Rica for less than $150. Of
course you have to jump on any low fare ASAP as you know how fares go nowadays.
I also like to look at their 'dream maps' for pricing.
I have used their site for several years now. No problems with ticketing, etc.
