considering the amount of water your car would have to navigate, the ferry
is actually quite cheap.

No, it's a real island.

You could lash together several kayaks. Then put your car on top of
these. Most likely it will sink. You could try to get in on board a
sea plane; it will probably sink the seaplane. A ferry is a lot less
risky in the long run.

No bridge. Ferry or fly.

Are you sure you need a car in Victoria? Taking buses between Vancouver
and Victoria, and getting around Victoria on foot and by taking a few
cabs can be cheaper than the return fare of a car on the ferry.

Nope, Victoria is on Vancouver Island with no bridge connecting it to the
mainland. Depending how many are in your party, and where you want to go,
and how much time you have, you might find it cheaper to take the bus. The
bus drives the to the terminal, then drives on the ferry, then drives off at
the other end and heads to downtown Victoria.

Takes about 3.5 hours each way - A return ticket is around $60 Canadian.

You can also do it on public transit, however it takes a long time, and is
considerably more time consuming and complicated - Email me below if you'd
like to consider that.

Compared with the cost of crossing from England to France, similar in
terms of distance, the BC ferries are really cheap - maybe a third of
the cost.

It's about half the cost of the ferry from Germany to Denmark, and it's a
heck of a lot more scenic.

Re: Vancouver to Victoria

If you're really trying to save money and absolutely need the car, you
could go the long way around by taking the Port Angeles ferry and then
driving several hours to Vancouver. You can also check out the
Washington State Ferries from Sidney to Anacortes. I think these ferry
rides are cheaper, but it'll be a bit of schlep to get to Vancouver
that way. If you're renting a car, you could als do 2 separate rentals
(1 in Victoria and 1 in Vancouver). By the way, someone else mentioned
public transportation - the bus system on the Saanich Peninsula is
pretty good and the connected transit systems throughout the Vancouver
metro area are fantastic. There is also a private express bus from the
ferry terminal in Tsawassen to several points in downtown Vancouver -
you can get tickets for this on board the ferry from Swartz Bay for
about $10.

For a road link, you'll have to wait for the Straits of Georgia to
freeze over in the next Ice Age.

One is south of Vancouver in Tswassen and runs to Port Sydney, about 20
km north of Victoria. The other is a little north of Vancouver at
Horseshoe Bay and runs to Naniamo.

1) The ferry that runs from "Victoria" to "Vancouver" runs from Swartz
Bay (Victoria - at the northern tip of the Saanich Peninsula) to
Tsawassen (Vancouver - a ways south of town). BC Ferries operates this
route. I seem to recall the 70 bus (could be 71) runs from downtown
Victoria all the way up the peninsula (past Sidney) to Swarz Bay.

2) There is also the Horseshoe Bay/Nanaimo route operated by BC Ferries
as described above.

3) The ferry that runs from "Victoria" to Anacortes runs from Sidney
(Victoria - about 3 km south of Swartz Bay), through the San Juan
Islands, to Anacortes, Washington. Anacortes is about halfway between
Seattle and Vancouver and the Washington State Ferries operates this
route.

4) The ferry from Victoria to Port Angeles leaves Victoria from the
downtown area, pretty much across the street from the Provincial
Legislature, and lands at "downtown" Port Angeles. I believe the ferry
is the MV Coho and is operated by Black Ball Transit. Port Angeles is
on the Olympic Peninsula, west of the Seattle/Tacoma area - Seattle
would be about halfway to Vancouver from Port Angeles. This is
probably the cheapest way to go financially, but will cost you dearly
in time.

5) There are also pricier passenger-only express ferries that operate
between Victoria and Bellingham or between Victoria and Seattle. I
don't know where the ferry landings are for these.

My interest is in getting two people off of a cruise ship over to
Victoria for a night and then back to Vancouverthe next day.

Well, this is doable but barely. Wouldn't be much fun. Why don't you
check for packaged bus tours from Vancouver? They might do it.

Even better: Take the harbour-to-harbour float plane service from
Vancouver to Victoria and back. It's within walking distance of the
cruise ship terminal, will get you to Victoria in a very short time, and
you won't have to worry about automobile and ferry hassles.

The full fare is $198/person return. Not cheap, but if you consider two
days' car rental, plus the return cost of the ferry, it doesn't cost that
much more, and you have a whole lot more time in Victoria. The views in
the air are worth the price alone, IMO.
