LA - Getty museum

This should be easy. We're looking at a week in Los Angeles, and
specifically to see the Getty museum. What's a convenient hotel in the
under 100 dollar range? What else is right in the area?

Also, we'd like to see the new Disney auditorium. Are there tours, or must
we buy performance tickets? If the latter, what would you recommend? We're
open minded to the arts, so I doubt that anything in such a venue would
disappoint us, though we're hardly opera buffs.

Our time frame is late April/early May of 2005.

thanks in advance,
keith

Re: LA - Getty museum

I live in LA and do not know of any hotel near the Getty. Next to it is
a fine museum, the Skirball, which is, for the most part, devoted to
Jewish displays.

I checked the web site <disney music hall> and nothing was listed
regarding tours.

If you are staying a week, and if you are 'art minded', there is much
more to see -- which I think requires a car rental.

The LA County Museum of Art is unusually fine, and in the same complex
is a very fine Japanese art museum.

And, of course, there is much, much more, which you would do best to
organize via a travel book.

Again, I think an auto is essential.

If you wish to contact me, e-mail is preferred.

Re: LA - Getty museum

The closest hotel is the Holiday Inn Brentwood/Bel-Air:
http://www.hibrentwood.com/
I've stayed there. The rooms are nice and basic, price range is about
what you mentioned. There is a nice restaurant and bar on the top
floor with a view of the L.A. basin.
The Disney Conert Hall is actually part of a complex of 4 theatres,
collectively known as the Los Angeles Music Center. Yes, you can tour
the Disney Concert Hall:
http://www.musiccenter.org/wdch/tours.html
Los Angeles has slews of museums, covering every imaginable subject,
second in the USA only to New York City.
Down the street a block or two (from the Disney Hall) is MOCA (Museum
of Contemporary Art).
If you put your trip off until June, the L.A. County Museum of Art will
be hosting over 150 items from the Cairo Museum, including the most
important pieces from King Tut's tomb.

Re: LA - Getty museum

I second the recommendation for the Brentwood/Bel Air Holiday Inn. It's not
fancy, but I've stayed there twice because of it's proximity to the Getty
(which you can even see from some rooms). Personally, I'm not a fan of LACMA
(although if you're into architecture, do note the Goff building while
you're there) or LA/MOCA, but the best views of the latter's main branch are
from the Disney complex's outdoor spaces--be sure to leave time to explore
them.

The Holiday Inn is also just down the road from the Hammer Museum (UCLA) and
if you're into the arts don't miss the Huntington Museum and Botanical
Garden and Norton Simon Museum, both in Pasadena, which of course is also a
mecca for fans of Greene & Greene's arts & crafts homes, among other
noteworthy architect's work.

You may want to look for a hotel in Santa Monica. It's not right next to
the Getty, but you can take a bus from Santa Monica to the museum. Santa
Monica is a very nice city to stay in, with many good restaurants.

Yes there are tours of the place. Call them up with you get to LA.

Re: LA - Getty museum

Thanks everyone - I looked at the Holiday Inn and it should be fine. I
don't see it on Hotel.com, but a lot of Venice hotels show up. We will have
a car, so is Venice still the funky place it used to be? Holiday Inn quotes
120/nt which is okay, but if Venice would be more fun we'd consider staying
closer to the beach.

Also, thanks for the tips on the Disney Center and other museums. We're
really making the trip to see the Getty Center, but I've yet to see a Gehry
building in person, so I'm glad to hear there are tours.
