Pell grants
Hi Folks,
I heard this morning that the rules governing Pell grants (one
of the major sources of college funding for non-rich students in the
U.S.) are being revised in such a way that less of that money well
be going to students. This will force many students to borrow more,
work on the side more, or delay their graduations. Some of those
students are certainly among those majoring in engineering, math,
and the sciences, fields for which we keep hearing there are looming
desparate shortages and my god the the U.S. is going to collapse
unless we get more students studying these subjects, the sky is
falling, help us, help us! Well, if that is true then we are
figuratively blowing our societal brains out by cutting funding
that helps those students get an education. Explanations for this
astounding bit of the left hand not telling the right what it's doing
include that there is no looming shortage of college graduates, or
the present administration doesn't want a better educated population
because it could more easily assess the competence of the
administration. :-) Anyone want to offer alternate hypotheses?
Cheers,
Russell
