Job Story: ER Nursing is thankless and awful.

AMEN, You said it all and you said it right. I left nursing after only in it 5 years. I wasted all those years of my life for nothing. I am glad I am not the only one out there who thinks the same way. I think strippers and prostitutes get more respect than nurses do.

Are you saying that the US medical system is not the best in the world? Why shame on you, Darlink.

Thanks for sharing.

Wow. That was some story. No wonder you left. You certainly have strong emotions about it still.

Nursing

Yup, I have been a RN, BSN for 19 years, and its all true. The professions greatest threat is itself. It not only shamelessly destroys its own, but is proclaims each victory over its own with the self agrandizing of a 2 year old who stomps on ants on the sidewalk.

AMEN! AMEN to ALL of THAT!

You left out the EMTs and Paramedics who think they know more than you!

I was in this rat race for 4 years -- Am unemployed now, considering a NEW career, but I don't regret leaving! Not for a minute! Enough with the dysfunction! Enough!

Cool ER Nurse

I share your frustration and would like to vent some of my own. Friday I was working triage in a full and short staffed ER. We had 6 people in the waiting room, waiting 1-2 hours for entry into the ER. A local Indian physician presented her mother (with a chief complaint of dental pain) at my desk. She had arranged by phone to be seen immeidately by one of our middle eastern physicians. Of course I wasn't informed. The ER physican directed me to bring her right in and I refused stating I don't triage by socio-economic position but by medical necessity. Needless to say that didn't go over well. I will now face the subtle harrassment of an ER MD Trio that are from the same middle eastern country because I snubbed their value of preferred medical care for those of wealth and position. The ER doc had the nerve to whine "we should, at least, receive some perks for working here". This makes me so angry.

ER nurse

Very interesting how your jobs have really gotten you. You definitely reflect the people who made a bad choice with their careers. Frustrated with their jobs, stressed, unhappy, or just one of those who are always in a bad mood in the ER just because their job sucks. Well, it is good that you decided to leave the profession, since people like you should not be taking care of patients in the condition you are. This profession is for stronger minded people, with high coping skills, and definitely a sense that we do not live in a perfect world, and therefore you cannot expect perfection, you can only do your best to try to give good care. Isn’t that why you chose this profession? If not, that is why you are so frustrated.

The entire medical field is driven by corporate greed (think Big Pharma). It's all about money, nothing more.
