First Time Costa Rica

I'm going to be in Costa Rica, but only for a few days.
I'm starting off in San Jose.

I want to see natural beauty and some wildlife. I'm somewhat fearful of
snakes .While I want to go on some trails and such, I don't want to
get lost in a jungle!

I'd like to see a volcano, a waterfull, some jungle, maybe do a cable
car
or sky walk, and see some mountains. I wanted to go to a beach, but it
seems like time may not be sufficient for this?

Any other must dos? What is your opninion of Iguana Park? I've never
been to C.R. before. Any gotchas or rip-offs? Which areas will I need
a tour guide for?

Re: First Time Costa Rica

Is a passport required for U.S. Citizens going to Costa Rica?

Thanks.

No, a driving license or, failing that, Safeway or Piggly Wiggly reward
card will do just fine.

If you do run into any problems at the airport, it will simply be because
the immigration officers are looking for a bribe. Don't give in to their
corrupt ways. Demand to see the local US consul; the threat alone will
bring them back into line.

Re: First Time Costa Rica

Thanks. I thought that was the case. Another question.
Are the rules different for Costa Ricans visiting the
USA? Or do they have to have a passport/visa?

Indeed, the rules are different for Costa Ricans (or "Ticos" as they like
to call themselves: "Tricky Ticos" more like it).

They require a passport, visa, notarized letters of reference from a
clergyman or priest and/or their elementary school teachers, evidence from
a local bank that they own their own home, plus at least $8,000 in cash
(which may or may not be kept by INS as a "security deposit," to be
returned on their way back out of the country).

Moreover, Ticos are discouraging from travelling in groups of three or
more, and no indivividual Tico may make the journey north twice in the
same decade (though there are certain exemptions for diplomats and other
entertainers).

Hope this helps.

No problem. Indeed, there are plenty of little curiosities like this;
immigration can be a minefield for the unwary. It's always worth reading
up before contemplating overseas travel! Fortunately, now, with the world
wide web and newsgroups such as these, you can get up-to-date and accurate
information at the click of a mouse or the tap of a keyboard.

Re: First Time Costa Rica

Are you people nuts.
A passport is required to enter Costa Rica as of more than a year ago.
Natives of most Latin American countries including Costa Rica have to have
hardcore proof that they want to vist the USA, not migrate there.
