Mexico losing maquiladoras jobs to Central America
By UNITED PRESS INTERNATIONAL
Published December 9, 2004
ACUÑA, Mexico -- Maquiladora factories are fleeing Mexican border towns
for Central America, El Universal reported Thursday.
Some 25 maquiladoras, which produce and assemble product components
for foreign-owned companies for export, have abandoned the city of
Acuña, across from Del Rio, Texas, in the last four years. As rents for
the maquiladoras go up from $15,000 to $35,000 monthly, more companies
are expected to relocate to countries like Nicaragua and El Salvador,
whose governments are offering shipping benefits in exchange for relocation.
Acuña's problem is similar to many other cities in Mexico's
northern states, where local politicians say President Vicente Fox has
not done anything to try to retain the maquiladora jobs.
"The management and directors of these companies say they are going
because Mexico is no longer competitive," said Evaristo Lenin Pérez
Rivera, local coordinator for the Commission on Border Issues. "There is
a lack of incentives, and tax burdens and quotas for social security.
The Treasury Department does not have flexibility, and even with great
distances, it is more convenient to source from China."

Most of these companies left the United States for Mexico, because they
said they couldn't compete, because of the high wages in the United
States, now it costs to much to do business in Mexico. What these
greedy bastards are looking for, is slave labor.
