Caterpillar overhaul will cost 500 jobs

Friday, December 03, 2004

Date: Friday, December 03, 2004 2:08:58 PM EST

PEORIA, Ill., Dec. 3 (UPI) -- Caterpillar says a $40 million
restructuring plan at its Mapleton, Ill., foundry will result in the
loss of more than 500 jobs.

Those jobs, about 560 hourly, union-represented positions, will be
outsourced to a joint venture Caterpillar plans to form with a
Mexico-based company, a fact that rankles the United Auto Workers union,
the Peoria (Ill.) Journal said Friday.

The jobs will be relocated to a foundry that will be built in northern
Mexico if the joint venture is approved by the directors of Caterpillar
and Grupo Industrial Saltillo, which would be the majority owner of the
joint venture.

That would leave about 200 positions, including salaried and management,
at Mapleton, a spokesman said.

Without the joint venture, the spokesman said, the Mapleton plant might
have to close.

So much for the union protecting those employee's jobs.

These jobs will be lost not because Cat is losing money or even doing
poorly. These jobs are going south due to plain old GREED. Cat is
doing great but no amount of profit is ever enough. So screw the
people who made Cat a rich company. Just move south to a place where
workers are afraid to speak up,afraid to go home at the end of a hard
day. Go someplace where workers can be replaced if they get hurt with
no workers comp.

Speaking of greed, do the employees who were expecting the union to do
its job and protect their jobs get a refund on their union dues or do
the greedy union bastards running the union just keep that money for
themselves?

Leave it to you to blaim the union for job losses to mexico. If they
had found a way to keep the jobs at home you would call it "extortion
by labor bosses".

So then just what does the union do for the union dues it collects?
Whine when jobs go away? Buy Cuban cigars for the union bosses?

The union reps are working day and night to keep this plant open and
fulley employed while our anti worker government is using everyones
tax money to subsidize the loss of jobs to mexico.

The anti worker republican party should rebate the taxes these workers
have paid and they should do it out of their own pockets.
The union IS the workers they should not be blaimed for losing a bunch
of jobs when the deck is stacked.

false pretenses?

Of course they won't refund the dues you idiot! Now ask some more
stupid questions about unions.

That's what I figured. I just wanted to make it clear to union fans that
in a union, it's the fat cats that make out like bandits and the working
guy gets the shaft.

There are no stupid questions about unions, except one - how can I get a
union at my job? That's like asking the burglar if he wants your house keys.

That is just the way it works, you should know that by now. I'm sure
you have "fat cats" in your company. At least our fat cats are working
for us. We pay their salarys, and can fire their fat asses if they
screw up, you on the other hand work for fat cats you have no control
over, and they would dump you in a heartbeat, if they could find an
illegal Mexican immigrant, to do your job for half of what you make.

That's why I will not ever sign up for a union. Unions are just thieves
in a different disguise.

Re: Caterpillar overhaul will cost 500 jobs

Even if the whole plant closed today the workers have made more money,
Had longer vacations, had better health care, had better working
conditions, and have lived better all around thanks to the efforts of
the UAW. No body can make Cat stay in the USA but they would never
have gotten as wealthy as they have without American auto workers. I
know many contractors who bought only American equipment for many years
but now there is less reason to be loyal to them if they are not loyal
to America.
