Talking Job Story: love nursing and always will!...nurse

AMEN. I am a new grad RN BScN in Canada and I totally agree with you! Nurses who are obviously not content working with people should definitely not be in this profession. I've seen a lot of them first hand and it makes me feel sorry for all of the patients they provide "care" for. Nursing is a difficult job to fulfill but it has countless rewards. Nursing isn't for everyone but for the ones it is for, we can work together with individuals and families to promote health and a sense of well-being.

canada nurse

this is for the nurse from canada who loves her job. not everyone loves where they work or the stress that comes from nursing. you were just lucky to find a nice place to work in.I find many nurses love careing for the patients, but not the other stuff they have to put up with.

Newbies ARE funny Drugpusher. Especially foreign ones. I have a strong suspicion that British and Canadian nurses have no idea what we US nurses are subjected to. I've even had an Australian nurse tell me as much (He worked in Australia and England) and then went on to tell me that US nursing is "bloody hell." British and Aussie patients are not nearly as sick as our American counterparts nor do physicians pull out all the stops that they do here just to turn a dime. How dare you foreign nurses judge us before walking a mile- or make it the 7.5 that I walked at work the other day- in our shoes. There's something here in America we call the blues and you sure as hell'd be singin' them too if you had to deal with what we do.

Thumbs up foriegn nurses

To the nurse who mentioned the difference in working conditions between U.S. nurses and foriegn nurses.... this is something I have long wondered about. I think you HAVE HIT THE NAIL ON THE HEAD.

I am researching nursing in Canada and the UK. There is a definite difference between the stories of experiences of US nurses and those in the UK, Canada and Australia. I just don't get the same responses from foreign nurses that I get when speaking with American nurses. It sounds as if US nurses have a really shitty deal. They sound burnt out, disillusioned and angry.

Let's face it... nurses ARE HEALTHCARE. Nurses make up the largest group of healthcare workers in ANY country.

If you take a country with a for-profit medical system (like the U.S.) and an increasingly obese, asthmatic, diabetic and ageing population (like the U.S.) then you have a HUGE nursing bill to pay. HUGE. Billions of dollars a year go to the provision of nursing care. Now here's where the problem lies...

If you run a FOR-PROFIT business, you are going to try to cut expenses where you can. The biggest pool of money to cut from is the nursing salary pool. Most nurses are working mothers. The CEO figures he can take advantage of working moms and cut nurses salaries, overwork them, over schedule them and FOCUS ON PROFIT.

Hell, no... I wouldn't want to be an American nurse, either.

Here in Canada, we have public health care. EVERYBODY has access to health care. All of the doctors and most of the nurses are paid through the government system, not by private facilities interested in profits. Healthcare is public, you can't get rich off of it. All hospitals in Canada are government run.

I really think this makes a difference to nurses' working conditions. Just my 2 cents.

I'd rather have someone call me a " funny newbie " who might seem naive for actually enjoying what they do, than be cranky and whining my whole life. Have a nice shift!

I called you a "funny newbie" because you had just graduated and were already telling other nurses that they should get out of the profession! You had some sort of gall to do that. Have you considered a management career?

OH CANADA, how strange is it that the Maple leaf nurses who I've met and love our glorius profession quickly return to the great white north when they realize the dollars they came seeking are payed for with blood sweat and soul. then make a hasty retreat to promissed land of socialized medicine, where mgmt, md's and RNs run hand n hand over snow capped mountains. While their pts wait patiently to have a life saving operation.
And to those new U.S. grads I hope you feel the same when your fired for not being able to make it to work during a hurricaine as over 100 were in florida last year or the vacation you requested last december is denied a week before your scheduled departure or maybe you'll decide to have children and enjoy the holidays no that's out as well . I guess you'll just have to take pride in buttwiping and pill pushing. No wait I'm wrong you'll be the one that changes things (remember hospital corners).

According to my experience you are disillusioned about the UK.

increasingly obese, asthmatic, diabetic and ageing population (like the U.S.). That also describes the UK.

The UK is not money driven. Well you should tell that too nurses on the ICU of my local hospital. Who have been reprimanded for
spending too much cleaning linen.

The reality here in the U.K as far as I can see. From my expereince of working in a hospital is this.

14 hour long days. Sometimes three days in a row.

Patients who assault you.

CUTBACKS.

A Patients saying that a nurse is a slave.

Buzzers going off constantly.

Stress. Some have taken leave of absence.

People always wanting a s*** or a pee.

Being conscious about how much money you spend.

The National Health Service in this country is facing ruin, because of it's massive debt. We are talking possibly billions of £.

Diabetes is set to be the biggest killer in the UK after cancer, and will perhaps be the biggest in 15 years time.

Nurses being blamed for MRSA or Clostridium.

Ward Closures.

The shortage in nurses, because thousands choose to leave the proffession, or go abroad.

Patients treating doctors with much more respect.

Nurses continuously complain about their jobs.

Wards being short staffed.

People taking the NHS for granted.

Low pay.

People constantly wondering about saving money.

Demanding patients.

Not being able to find a spare member of staff when you need one.

Visitors.

BINGO! That's it!! Now that I'm middle management I see it. I ALWAYS have to fight about money!!! That's what American Healthcare is all about. It's just another field of business like retail. Work for a major healthcare provider and you might as well work at walmart. It's disgusting that what SHOULD have been a wonderful and noble profession has turned into a way for corporate america to make $$$$
